MSIG insures large multinational and domestic companies, and offers comprehensive global insurance programs.  Our US subsidiary, Mitsui Sumitomo Marine Management (MSMM), currently has an opportunity available for a Senior Production Underwriter in our Los Angeles office.

Summary: Produce and underwrite profitable Commercial Lines business, consisting of:  package, automobile, workers’ compensation and umbrella within assigned territory.  Looking for a self-starter to expand territory.

  Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Selects and underwrites Commercial Lines new and renewal risks within delegated underwriting authority. 
  • Consults with agents and brokers to obtain new business submissions and manages the assigned territory by visiting agents, brokers and clients.
  • Requires in depth knowledge of the local marketplace, strong agency relationships and a keen sense of local competition.
  • Applies appropriate pricing of techniques according to company filings and state/bureau conformance.
  • Monitors underwriting results, premium and loss trends within assigned book of business.
  • Establishes and executes insured and agency visits, independently or with Risk Engineering, Claims, Underwriting Manager and Regional Underwriting Executive.
  • Establishes and implements effective production plan with agents and brokers in their assigned territory.
  • Determines if reinsurance is needed and procures quotes from various internal and external markets

Education and/or Experience                                                    

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; CPCU or insurance related courses helpful.
  • 5+ years underwriting multi-line middle market commercial business ($75,000 to $1m), with a minimum of 3 years in a production a role.
  • Experience with advanced underwriting concepts such as large deductible and loss sensitive programs is helpful.
  • Must also have demonstrated negotiation and production skills.
  • Able to work independently and remotely.
  • Ability to travel (same day and overnight) using all forms of transportation (40%).
