The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
Description
Manages a team typically of Surety Underwriters varying by region/product line. Drives a culture of underwriting excellence and provides ongoing feedback, coaching, and guidance to increase underwriting skill set and maximize performance. Supports hiring activities, and responsible for development and pay and performance management. Accountable for quality and quantity of work, personnel, performance appraisals, new business acquisition and profit and loss (financial) results of assigned territory or office. Monitors business portfolio and accountable for meeting new business target, premium, and expense budgets.
Responsibilities
Acts as a point of escalation/referral on complex underwriting decisions. May assist senior management on the workforce plan for assigned office/territory. Promotes mobility across the Surety organization. Establishes employee development/growth plans to address skill enhancement opportunities and ensures that new underwriters are trained and/or supported by experienced underwriters or managers with respect to technical underwriting issues, meetings with producers, customers, etc. Shares industry knowledge and underwriting expertise with less experienced underwriters. Creates, develops, and drives team performance, clearly communicating expectations and performance measures and taking decisive action when performance is not meeting expectations. Drives employee engagement through effective execution of talent management practices and cultivates an inclusive environment that makes others feel valued. Manages own portfolio of business/accounts/producers considered complex and/or high impact in scope. Manages or assists in managing a territory/country operation. Contributes significantly to the budget and business plans including marketing, underwriting, training, and administration functions. Coordinates the management functions for the staff and the assigned product line and/or territory. Services the surety needs of customers and manages profitability, risk mitigation, growth strategies, and metrics for specific accounts and assigned underwriting portfolio. Understands and applies insights of the surety products and capabilities of competitors. Monitors and analyzes market activity, agency/customer market penetration and successes/losses against key competitors and adapts strategies to adjust to specific circumstances. Has a strong producer/customer network and develops new producers/customers and coordinates development and implementation of individual marketing plans in assigned marketplace. Participates in the delivery of products and services to meet producers and customers` needs. Understands the company`s compensation and incentive programs and responds to questions, follows up on issues, makes and keeps commitments and mentor staff members and/or direct reports to position Liberty Mutual Surety to be considered a Trusted Advisor. Participates in cross-selling or otherwise expanding business with producers/customers as needed. May designate or act as a Key Relationship Manager for specific customers.
- Degree in Business or equivalent typically required
- 7 years progressive surety underwriting experience expected
- Proven analytical ability to evaluate underwriting risks within scope of responsibility
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information
- Has capability to mentor and share information with less experienced employees for underwriting and training purposes
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external partners required
