Work Environment

The Senior Statutory Staff Accountant is a hybrid eligible role, in our Reno, NV or Monterey, CA, and Roseville, CA locations.   

Job Overview

The Senior Accountant has a responsibility in supporting the Accounting Manager in meeting departmental goals and objectives and assisting with the development of workflows, policies, procedures, and internal controls within the assigned area. Responsible for completing reports for both internal and external users to accurately reflect company operating results and financial condition. The position will contribute in the production of internal financial reports for management, the executive team and the Board of Directors.  Internal reporting includes the completion of financial statements from the trial balance, budget reports, productivity reports, cash flows, and other special reports. External reporting includes filings to state insurance departments (i.e., annual statements, quarterly statements, statistical calls, etc.). Also includes the completion of reports to Federal, State, and local agencies, and reinsurance companies and brokers.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the accuracy of the general ledger and accounting sub-systems. Directly maintain and reconcile specific general ledger accounts and review general ledger accounts maintained by other accounting staff such as fixed assets, investments, and cash accounts. Responsible for posting daily and month-end entries.
  • Complete reports for internal and external users to accurately reflect company operating results and financial condition. Internal reporting includes the completion of financial statements from the trial balance, productivity reports, cash flows, and other special reports.
  • Review of existing and proposed systems to determine the proper use of controls to ensure the integrity of operating procedures. Periodically review procedures to ensure compliance with controls and operational efficiency. Provide written evaluations and proposals.
  • Assist with external audits by company auditors or state or federal examiners. Prepare requested schedules and documentation. Explain and demonstrates procedures.
  • Communicate with internal and external personnel regarding reporting requirements, information, or operating analysis. Answer written, telephone, or in person inquiries regarding accounting practices and procedures.
  • May be requested to perform or assist in the completion of special projects or proposals. May be required to analyze data and present findings or recommendations.

Requirements

  • 3 - 5 years of work experience in Property and Casualty insurance accounting with the understanding of the key concepts and terminology utilized within Property and Casualty.

  • Bachelor’s degree (or 5+ years’ experience) in Accounting.

  • Proficient knowledge of statutory and GAAP accounting procedures including internal control and insurance regulations.

  • Understand the concepts and terminology of insurance accounting.

  • Display proficiency in the use of the SunGard Ledger package or related ledger software.

  • Must be able to handle multiple projects and adjust to shifting priorities.

  • Effectively communicate with customers inside and outside of the organization.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with a focus on Excel, Word, and a basic understanding of network functionality.

  • Exceptional work ethic, integrity, and ability to work autonomously while effectively managing expectations.

  • CPA recommended.

Salary range: $71,606 - $118,150
