POSITION SUMMARY
The Claim Supervisor will supervise a specific operating unit within the claims department and may include the supervision of a staff of claim examiners, technical assistants and external adjusters. This position reports directly to the Director of Claims and works with others within the company, as well as outside vendors, legal counsel and business partners for successful completion of projects. This is a full time position. Regular working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am- 4:00 pm, although, there is some flexibility in hours within the confines of the job requirements.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assign claims or tasks to staff.
• Reviews claims assigned to the staff, provides technical direction, ongoing guidance and monetary authority to settle losses within the vested authority.
• Manages an effective diary system to assure that all claims are handled timely and appropriately.
• Communicates appropriate information to staff.
• Works with team members and managers to identify and resolve any performance gaps, personnel issues or improvement opportunities.
• Duties may also include work on special programs. Travel and field work may occur during both business and non-business hours, including holidays, weekdays, weekends, overnight, and extended periods of time.
• Serve as a catastrophe team member and assist with the execution of the Company’s Catastrophe Response Plan.
• Exercises independent judgment and discretion in performance of duties and responsibilities.
• Maintains positive interpersonal skills and abilities.
• Engages in cognitive and analytic abilities.
• Conducts ongoing file reviews to ensure compliance in operating procedures.
• Provides supervision, direction, development and leadership to direct reports. Provides guidance and training to accomplish company goals and objectives. Directs and supervises property and liability claims; effectively and efficiently manages staff, independent adjusters, experts, attorneys and vendors.
• Provides leadership for employee relations through effective communications, coaching, training, and development.
• Provides leadership for problem resolution to facilitate faster improvements and improved working relationships. Exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others and works to maintain constructive working relationships, setting examples for others.
• Supports project teams in processing quality activities by educating, coaching and mentoring others on process improvement philosophy, tools and application. Looks for ways to streamline processes and resources.
• Hires, trains, develops, and appraises staff effectively. Takes corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policies. Ensures direct reports are adhering to company policies and administering practices in a fair and equitable manner. Consults with Human Resources as appropriate.
• Adhere to applicable safety precautions at all times.
• Required to transport and carry all necessary equipment.
• Maintain strict confidentiality on all files and records.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is required to write; reach with hands; stand; walk; and key frequently on a computer for long periods of time (4 or more hours per day).
• Performs all other duties as assigned.
SKILLS
• In-depth understanding of claims operating practices and claims litigation laws and regulations.
• Must have the ability to identify, analyze, evaluate, and resolve issues
• Must possess strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
• Must be knowledgeable of Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Must be able to establish priorities in work assignments and have the ability to multi task and work under pressure and deadlines. Must exercise good decision making and independent judgment.
• Must be able to climb ladders, roofs, climb through small spaces, crawl spaces and home attics, and maintain a three point safety contact at all times.
• Must have knowledge of proper use of equipment and materials and supplies used.
• Must have good manual dexterity and coordination. Excellent stamina is required.
• Must be able to walk and stand for long periods of time.
• This job, at times, operates in a clerical office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as a calculator, computer, phone(s), photocopier, filing cabinet and fax machine. Employees must be able to sit for long periods of time, type, and lift up to twenty pounds.
• Ability to work flexible hours if needed.
EXPERIENCE
• Minimum 5 years property and/or casualty claims experience required.
EDUCATION
• Active Louisiana Adjuster License required.
• Bachelor’s Degree required.
