Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?

Under general direction, is responsible for developing, leading, and implementing externally focused communications strategies and initiatives in support of business goals and strategic priorities. Serves as chief communications advisor to the head of a business or function and their leadership team. The individual will have regular, direct contact with the media. This position manages and leads others including external agency resources in the execution of externally focused communication plans and strategies.

What Will You Do?

  • Lead the development, implementation, and execution of external integrated strategic business communications plans that directly advance business objectives and priorities while reinforcing and promoting the company's reputation among key stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement corporate public relations objectives, programs and projects.
  • Serve as a strategist and thought partner to VP, of External Communications and leadership team.
  • Advise senior business leaders and project teams on external communications objectives, strategy, and content for a variety of external audiences at all levels.
  • Partner with business area/initiative subject matter experts to develop content for external strategic communications.
  • Counsels senior leadership on external communications approach and stakeholder engagement; recommends changes.
  • Utilize a deep level of communications expertise to ensure implementation of external communications aligned with business objectives.
  • Provide leadership to development and implementation of external communications across all external audiences.
  • Identify risks, issues, and challenges and recommend solutions related to the business; works closely with leaders to craft key messages.
  • Ensure that enterprise approval processes, templates, and brand guidelines are followed in the development of external communications materials.
  • Ensure that key strategic business messages are integrated into initiative and project communications strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across the Communications team to ensure cross-functional team alignment with communications strategy and priorities.
  • Measure effectiveness of overall external communications through qualitative and quantitative methods. Review recommended changes and ensure implementation as appropriate.
  • Recruit, develop and motivate communications staff.
  • Interact with reporters from national and local news media; professors and researchers; and civic and community organizations interested in employee communications and employee relations issues.
  • Identify target audiences and media outlets.
  • Ensure that external communications are legally compliant and cost effective.
  • Cultivate strong partnerships/ relationships with business and function leaders, and works effectively with colleagues across the company.
  • Assist communications senior management in controlling expenses to ensure the most cost-effective methods are used while meeting business needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in communications and at least 10+ years' experience in a corporate communications role or public relations agency - agency and / or insurance experience is a plus. Exceptional writing skills.
  • Extensive experience working with reporters.
  • Thorough knowledge of all contemporary communications techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate methods and techniques for communicating with multiple audiences.
  • Thorough understanding of business strategies.
  • Thorough Knowledge: Possesses advanced knowledge of subject matter in order to solve unusual as well as common work problems.

What is a Must Have?

  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, PR, communications or minimum of 7 years of related communications experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of management experience.
