IAT Insurance Group has an immediate opening for an Aviation Underwriter to support our standard and innovative insurance products to the General Aviation community from an IAT's office in Scottsdale, AZ or Sarasota, FL or Kansas City, MO. Occasional travel may be required. This role will be tasked with significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles.

We work a hybrid schedule, working from the office Monday through Wednesday with the option of working remotely Thursday and Friday.


  • Review and analyze underwriting files, using judgment and experience as primary criteria, to accept new business or continue renewals within established authority level.
  • Review, evaluate and determine account premium levels using sound judgment consistent with established company premium modification plans within authority limits. Read, evaluate and interpret contracts and policies to determine exposures providing guidance and clarification to others consistent with experience.
  • Provide clarification and verification of coverage to the Claims Department consistent with experience.
  • Market to assigned agencies to achieve acceptable new business flow.
  • Assess agency activity; provide clarification to agency personnel about company's position in annual visits to assigned agencies consistent with experience.
  • Perform other tasks as needed.

Qualifications for an Underwriter:
Must Have:

  • Bachelors' degree in Aviation, Risk Management, Finance, Mathematics, Business or related with at least 2 years-experience in commercial Insurance or equivalent
  • Equivalent is defined as 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of Insurance Industry (Aviation preferred).
  • Must possess the ability to appropriately apply loss development and advanced loss analysis concepts to achieve optimal pricing of a risk.
  • Must possess the ability to creatively utilize coverage features, deductibles, or reinsurance on individual risks to achieve company objectives.
  • CAIP, CPCU, ARM, or AU industry designations preferred.
  • INS21, 22 and 23 or equivalent is a plus.
  • Requires strong math aptitude, excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills.
  • Must possess knowledge of various computer programs, internet-based programs, and PC literate in the use of spreadsheets.

Qualifications for a Trainee and or Associate Underwriter:
Must Have:

  • A four-year college degree or equivalent applicable experience
    Equivalent is defined as 4 years of applicable experience.
  • The desire and ability to travel.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as demonstrated leadership, professionalism, organization, and time management.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship by employer, now or in the future
  • To qualify, applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and must not require VISA sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment purposes.

Preferred for all levels of underwriters:

  • A demonstratable passion for or knowledge of aviation
  • Willingness to take ground school and other aviation related courses
  • Pilot License
