MGA seeks a fully trained and experienced underwriter in a specialty segment of the commercial auto marketplace. You will have the enthusiastic support of senior management to grow this established book of business and to participate in building a healthy and productive corporate culture.
You will be responsible for underwriting new and renewal business including risk selection and pricing, and retention in accordance with underwriting guidelines & practices and within the authority granted by management, reinsurers and the insurance carrier. The successful underwriter will be highly motivated to help the company make an underwriting profit and will do so with a minimal amount of supervision. Compensation is commensurate with experience; the bonus plan is based on profitability of the book of business.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Take an entrepreneurial approach in managing production to maximize net underwriting profit by maintaining an awareness of the market and market trends
- Gather information for the purposes of determination of risk acceptability, policy terms and pricing
- Consult senior management on acceptability, terms and pricing of unusual risks
- Provide guidance to assigned producers and provide them feedback on submission package efficiencies
- Keep informed about state and local insurance regulations and laws
- Represent the company in a courteous, friendly & professional manner
- Promote the goals established by the management
- Train and mentor junior staff
- Be a sounding board for product changes and bringing product improvement ideas in from the field for consideration
- Interface with claims VP and TPA as needed and participate in monthly claims round table meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 6 years of sound commercial auto underwriting and analysis experience with an emphasis on trucking, towing, collateral recovery and auto hauling
- Knowledge of commercial auto rating rules and procedures
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred
- Insurance Courses (ARM, AU, CPCU series) desired
- Ability to read write, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, routine reports, and correspondence
- Ability to communicate effectively with all personnel, management, and vendors
- Proficiency with MS applications including Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint
- Ability to efficiently carry out instructions
- Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record
- Ability to travel by air as needed
