CAMICO's Underwriter is responsible for:

  1. Evaluation, acceptance or declination of new or renewal business.
  2. If accepted, determination of pricing and terms.
  3. Evaluation and response to endorsement requests.
  4. Assists policyholders/agents with their questions regarding coverage issues.

All performed while under moderate direction/supervision and in adherence to CAMICO’s underwriting guidelines, underwriting authority guidelines, service standards and company and department goals.

An Underwriter handles all the tasks associated with an assigned book of business.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

UNDERWRITING    

Exercise sound judgment and decision-making ability in analyzing insurance applications and endorsements for accountants’ professional liability, employment practices liability and other coverages underwritten by CAMICO. Use external resources, such as the firm’s website, to investigate what the firm is representing to the public it is doing.  Investigate other resources such as Audit Analytics, Edgar, Bankrate etc. to help develop a clear understanding of securities and financial institution exposures for your own files.  Seek assistance from other Departments and CAMICO Underwriters, Senior Underwriters, Underwriting Managers or Senior Team Members on risks that fall outside of your underwriting authority.

COMMUNICATIONS    

Cultivate thorough knowledge of CAMICO’s lines of insurance and related questions from phone and correspondence (including e-mail) inquiries.  Provide excellent and courteous customer service through telephone conversations and through e-mails and correspondence. Document the file through underwriting notes and notes of important conversations and transactions in our system.  Be able to operate in a paperless environment.

CLAIMS ANALYSIS    

Analyze claims data for accounts within your territory. Make recommendations to improve firm loss experience or advise Underwriting Manager if analysis reveals that is not possible.

FIRM/AGENCY VISITS   

When department workloads permits and at direction of Underwriting Manager, participate in Loss Prevention seminars and presentations, firm visits and agency calls.

PROJECTS    

Assists in projects designed to improve personal and departmental performance. Willingness to work with IT Department on testing.

SALES    

Keep up to date on market intelligence and insurance competition activities to be able to respond appropriately and relay this information to the department. Respond timely to our direct sales or agency personnel within customer service standards. Assist in the obtaining of new accounts and the renewing of current business.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:    

Adhere to established departmental service standards and report to the Underwriting Manager, upon request, the status of work in progress and work completed with action plans.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None.  However, duties include providing direction to Underwriting Assistants and Junior Underwriters.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

A bachelor’s degree is preferred but will consider candidates working on their degree or willing to continue their general or insurance specific education.  Work towards insurance designations highly encouraged.  In lieu of degrees, insurance specific job experience will be considered.

Prefer a minimum of two years in the area of professional liability insurance.  More extensive insurance or other work experience may be considered in lieu of specific professional liability insurance experience.

TECHNICAL SKILLS and ABILITIES:

* Mathematical aptitude-- Ability to calculate figures and amounts including policy premium, discounts, interest, commissions, proportions and percentages.

* Computer experience with proficiency in Word and Excel preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must be either currently licensed as a Fire and Casualty Broker-Agent or willing to take the pre-licensing class and take and pass the exam within a specified time period. Complete required CPE to maintain the Fire and Casualty Broker-Agent license.

Underwriter Authority:

Per individual authority letter from Underwriting Manager.
