Purpose and Importance of Position

The Training and Development Specialist is responsible for enterprise wide training and development programs which aligns with and supports company goals and strategy. This position designs, develops and delivers sustainable training and instructional programs and provides guidance and consults on development of organizational talent.

Essential Functions

  • Act as a trusted advisor / consultant for business partners and SMEs to develop relationships and collaborate across the organization to identify individual and organizational learning and development needs and recommend solutions aligned to business objectives
  • Partner with departments to determine effective training solutions and delivery methods through needs assessment and evaluation of training needs.
  • Manage, design and develop end-to-end solutions for self-directed, online, virtual and classroom learning including course outlines and required support materials.
  • Work with members of the HR team and the business to maintain the industry based skills curriculum for the organization.  This includes on-boarding curriculum and materials for continuous learning and development for existing staff.
  • Design, deliver and manage behavioral, on-boarding and technical curriculum for the organization with the help of SMEs.
  • Define learning objectives, conduct evaluations, and utilize multiple methods for delivery of learning which incorporates adult learning theory
  • Lead and coordinate effective training delivery including analysis, implementation, testing and documentation of educational systems.
  • Develop and maintain the knowledge bank of training materials to include competency check lists, training handbooks, job aids, models, multimedia visual aids, computer and web-based tutorials, standard operating procedures, and end-user documentation.
  • Partners with other Fairfax entities to share best practices, and training materials as appropriate for the business.
  • Train and coach managers and subject matter experts in techniques and skills for adult learning and development.
  • Use industry standard methods to evaluate effective training programs and their business impact.
  • Manage the Performance Management process to include:
    • Development for associates including recommendations for development actions, mentoring program and measurement of objectives. Builds templates to assist managers with development of their employees. Assists with preparing tools to help employees for making the next step in their career.
    • Behavioral competencies measurements
    • Annual performance review process including effective review writing, delivery of review to associates, measurement of achievement of goals and behaviors
  • Work closely with talent acquisition team to ensure a consistent employee onboarding experience.  This includes intern programs and new hire training.
  • Supports cultural activities and programs including delivery of content.

 

Required Skills

  • Excellent organizational and communications skills (oral and written), ability to manage projects independently, and pursue multiple objectives simultaneously.
  • Able to own and execute on multiple projects at the same time
  • Must have extensive experience and maintain proficiency in the use of programs such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Experience developing and publishing training curriculum using online/e-learning design and delivery tools such as Captivate, Prezi, Camtasia
  • Customer service oriented with the ability for developing long lasting relationships with internal and external business partners.
  • Prior experience with instructional design, and adult learning theory preferred.
  • Experience delivering large and small learning/training events.

Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years of work experience in a training and development capacity required. 
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience in a talent development capacity, including performance management and facilitation of learning events.
  • Experience in the insurance industry preferred by not required.
  • HR experience

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree in related field or other equivalent experience

Preferred Education or Certification

AINS, SHRM-CP, ATD

Supervisory Role

Schedule, assign, and review the work of others in compliance with specific instructions.

Travel

Minimal, based upon business needs.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

This position operates in a professional cubicle based collaborative environment and must have the ability to timely produce thorough, accurate work with many competing demands, deadlines, and distractions. The position uses standard equipment such as phones, computers, copiers/printers and filing cabinets. Noise level is moderate. While this is a largely sedentary role, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear; stand; walk; bend; use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. On occasion the individual must be able to lift and transport boxes weighing up to 30 pounds.
