Job Summary 

Falls Lake Insurance is seeking qualified candidates for an Assistant Underwriting Manager position in its Individual Risk Workers Compensation underwriting division. The candidate selected will be responsible for successfully managing the underwriting team to accomplish the departmental goals, initiatives and objectives for profitability, production, compliance, and new product development.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Continuously exhibit and uphold Core Values of Integrity, Accountability, Communication and Teamwork, Innovation and Customer Service
  • Execute annual business plans for the department to include a profitable underwriting strategy
  • Ensure that all department milestones and goals are met
  • Interview, select and train new employees
  • Guide and help team members with issues
  • Responsible for day-to-day tactical team decisions
  • Track employee performance and provide regular and appropriate feedback
  • Work with employees to collaboratively establish development plans
  • Provide employee feedback through regular check-ins and writing and delivering performance reviews
  • Assist team through obstacles and time constraints to overcome barriers and successfully deliver results
  • Adhere to company guidelines and comply with state regulations
  • Solicit and underwrite profitable business from assigned agencies within the scope of delegated underwriting authority
  • Conduct underwriting audit of files to ensure underwriting guidelines and department policies are implemented consistently
  • Review and approve or decline risks exceeding an underwriter’s authority
  • Ensure maintenance and growth of profitable business partners by responding to inquiries and resolving agency problems in a timely, professional and informative manner
  • Evaluate agents by participating in on-going agency analysis and reviews
  • Partner with marketing to develop information regarding local market opportunities and competition and make recommendations regarding new products and rates
  • Travel with underwriters as needed and represent Falls Lake at marketing and agency events
  • Collaborate with Actuarial, Claims, IT, and other departments as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to lead, motivate, influence, and mentor staff
  • Ability to set clear expectations, effectively monitor progress, provide constructive feedback and guidance, and hold staff accountable
  • Knowledge of the P&C insurance industry, specifically, Workers Compensation
  • Proficiency in MC Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of current market conditions, distribution systems, trends competition and new product development
  • Ability to effectively assess risks, price, and negotiate business in accordance with established guidelines
  • Knowledge of key exposures and portfolio pricing techniques
  • Knowledge of forms and coverages
  • Ability to sell difference between our coverage and leading competitor’s product
  • Research, analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement in making critical and complex decisions

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Minimum of six years of underwriting workers compensation insurance 
  • Minimum of one year of people/talent management experience preferred
  • Designations (CPCU, ARM, AINS, AU, CIC) preferred
