Job Summary

Under broad supervision, the Field Underwriter will be primarily responsible for developing and managing the Virginia territory of Producers/ Agent. Additionally, the Field Underwriter is accountable for the profitable production of an assigned level of new written premium and renewal premium.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Continuously exhibit and uphold Core Values of Integrity, Accountability, Communication and Teamwork, Innovation and Customer Service.
  • Maintains direct contact with internal underwriting team and external agency partners to ensure processes are working as expected and are efficient as possible. 
  • Works directly with the agency partners to pre-qualify new business submissions to include direct interaction with prospective partners to gather necessary data to conduct thorough underwriting and pricing evaluation of submission potential.
  • Creates and executes a producer management plan that results in the achievement of our premium and profit goals while maintaining the highest level of client satisfaction. 
  • Completes annual producer evaluations and confirms that appropriate action plans are established.
  • Conduct thorough underwriting and pricing evaluations. Demonstrated analytical problem solving skills, such as the ability to use a systematic approach in solving problems by identifying the problem, developing a course of action, implementing action to affect a solution, and measuring the effectiveness of the action taken.
  • Resolves problems through direct, personal intervention or by collaborating with others.
  • Acts as the key facilitator and problem solver for assigned agencies.
  • Develop, plan, handle assigned tasks, track progress, measure completion, and report achievements up to Management. 
  • Conduct regularly scheduled agency visitation in order to develop strong working relationships with our select agency partners. 
  • Make risk selection decisions in the field to facilitate the quality and quantity of new business application flow.
  • Plan for and manage production, loss ratio, and agency visitation needs in order to meet departmental premium and profit goals and ensure alignment with company financial goals. 
  • Manage, own, and control assigned territory from all perspectives. 
  • Work closely with underwriting management to execute field underwriting strategy. 
  • Represents the company in a professional manner in all work-related functions including interdepartmental meetings and agency events.
  • Monitors and evaluates assigned territory/market for new prospects and/or program opportunities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of processing methods, workflow procedures, and intermediate knowledge of insurance underwriting in the assigned territory.
  • In-depth knowledge of workers compensation insurance product and related legal and regulatory guidelines. 
  • Must have strong analytical skills to quickly and efficiently analyze prospect opportunities during initial submission process.
  • Must be a technical problem solver and have strong decision making ability, while acting on own initiative.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written are required for the position – ability to communicate and overcome challenges or obstacles in establishing new partnerships while providing workable solutions that address them.
  • Strong leadership skills for driving successful meetings with cross-function teams. Must be able to articulate a strong sense of purpose as well as having the ability to control meetings where there may be various personalities vying for attention.
  • Strong professional image capable of gaining external credibility when meeting and presenting to Agents and/or prospective accounts. Ability to lead through influence without always having direct control or authority over other functional areas.
  • Demonstrated analytical problem solving skills, such as the ability to use a systematic approach in solving problems by identifying the problem, developing a course of action, implementing action to affect a solution, and measuring the effectiveness of the action taken. 
  • Possess excellent presentation skills, including the ability to prepare, organize, develop and present completed materials to an audience.
  • Self-motivated and self-confident. Must have passion for quality and customer service.
  • Excellent knowledge of required computer programs/systems, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs. Must have the ability to apply applications to job function and to access the Internet for reference materials.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with clean driving record. A clean driving record should include not more than two minor violations within the preceding three years. An MVR (motor vehicle report) will be run on incumbents upon an offer and on employees on a routine basis.

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited University in related field, and/or; 
  • Three (3) + years of Commercial Underwriting experience specifically in Workers Compensation, and/or ;
  • Experience managing agencies and a book of business, and/or;
  • AU, CPCU, CIC, AINS, ARM Designations, and/or;
  • Equivalent combination of experience and education.
