The Business Lines Underwriting Effectiveness team is responsible for developing Business Lines' underwriting strategy, with a focus on achieving several objectives: 1) ensuring our appetite is clear to internal and external partners, 2) improving our UW ecosystem to support excellent risk selection outcomes and 3) improving efficiency of underwriting processes. 


As part of the Line-of-Business UW Strategy team within BL UW Effectiveness, this individual will champion high-impact UW strategy priorities for several product lines. This role will focus primarily on general liability & umbrella lines as well as supporting the build out of UW capabilities for the Simple BOP and Next Gen Package products.


This role will work closely with product, underwriting and distribution teams to set strategic priorities and champion initiatives across BL teams that support our growth and profitability targets.  Responsible for determining top UW priorities for assigned lines of business and developing new / improving existing UW capabilities based on those priorities including appetite definition/refinement, UW guidelines, UW rules/questions, and supporting underwriting model development & third party data use cases. 



  • Develop, prioritize, and manage the build & roll-out of critical underwriting capabilities for assigned product lines (general liability & umbrella, including Simple BOP & Next Gen Package)
  • Create new / manage existing content across several UW tools in support of top UW strategy priorities for assigned lines: UW questions/rules, guidelines, risk level appetite & discretionary pricing tool guidance
  • Support innovation and test & learn of UW capabilities, including vendor inspections, data accuracy initiatives, underwriting models & third party data
  • Focus towards simplification and efficiency while maintaining quality objectives support automation where possible while ensuring UW touch is used where it matters
  • Partner with Express and Custom UW teams, Distribution partners and peers in GRS to understand market conditions, trends and emerging risks/opportunities
  • Develop comprehensive understanding of competitor products, underwriting practices, and pricing strategies; provide insight into opportunities to differentiate BL's product offering

  • Strong knowledge of commercial lines underwriting process & workflows, insurance finance & actuarial concepts, product management, claims, regulatory environment, and industry trends
  • Technical product & UW knowledge of general liability, including coverages/forms and risk evaluation strongly preferred
  • Ability to evaluate risks, identify alternatives, and make tradeoffs
  • Ability to see the big picture, create alignment, plan and organize work, and get work done through others
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, manage relationships, and influence
  • Excellent analytical, quantitative and problem-solving skills
  • Bachelor's in related field. Advanced degree and/or professional designations desirable.
  • 7-10 years of relevant product and/or underwriting experience in jobs with progressive responsibility
