Job Details

Job Summary:    The Sr. Homeowners Underwriter for Standard Casualty Company is responsible for creating, developing and managing opportunities for new and existing products, forms and coverages as well as all underwriting operation and results, driving new business production and retention efforts for all lines of business and evaluating and determining degree of acceptable risk with our portfolio.

Core Responsibilities/duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Review, accept, amend or deny insurance applications with underwriting exceptions, approve or deny cancellation requests and review property inspection reports
  • Strategic planning and thought around long term underwriting and corporate (3-year) goals
  • Manage multi-state forms and update underwriting guidelines, and monitor production and research competitors forms.
  • Collaborate claims experts and senior management to help companies develop plans for new territories and lines of business or improvement of existing business
  • Answer agents, clients and staff questions and build and maintain customer and agent relationships
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Operations, Loss Control, and Claims to operationalize underwriting decisions and collaborate with Actuarial and Industry Solutions Teams and enhancement of products, underwriting policies.
  • Proactively respond to regulatory and legal environment and oversee risk and account management based on state insurance laws.
  • Maintain understanding of industry competitors in each market segment.  Identify trends and emerging issues; monitor underwriting results for region(s).
  • Participate in underwriting audits as well as internal quality review audits from a Home-Office perspective.
  • Lead underwriting and approval process to maximize profits and minimize losses.
  • Responsible for management, supervision, training and development of underwriting department in portfolio-building and underwriting skills.
  • Develop or maintain excel databases.
  • Any additional duties assigned by the supervisor.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, legal or insurance-related field is required.
  • A minimum of three to five years personal line underwriting experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • A minimum of three years of proven management and underwriting team leadership.
  • Ability to articulate a clear purpose and vision for the team that motivates colleagues and guides their actions and decision-making using exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively.
  • Strong analytical skills to see the trends and plan accordingly.

Work Environment and Physical Demands with reasonable accommodations:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time and be able to operate a computer or other office productivity machinery on a constant basis.
  • Frequently required to communicate with co-workers and policy holders with the ability to exchange accurate information as necessary.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office, ascend/descend stairs or a ladder or position self to maintain computers at workstation, including under the desk or other low areas
  • Occasionally required to move and place objects weighing less than or equal to 20 pounds
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • Position may require temporary remote work.  Employee must have Wi-Fi connectivity, a smart phone and a designated work area in their home.
