POSITION TITLE:     ACCOUNTANT

DEPARTMENT:         ACCOUNTING

REPORTS TO:          ACCOUNTING MANAGER

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include performing Accounting functions and maintaining financial records within the limited authority under direct supervision of the Accounting Supervisor or Accounting Manager.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Process all accounting accounts receivable, billing and claim payment referrals and tasks in the Policy Administration Systems.

• Post adjusting journals entries to the General Ledger.

• Reconcile applicable balance sheet and income statement accounts daily (Premiums, Expenses, Claims).

• Provide consumers with telephone payment assistance.

• Reconcile and process ACH transactions.

• Research and respond to accounts receivable and billing inquiries.

• Research and post daily return deposit items.

• Reconcile monthly agent commission expenses and statements.

• Maintain Fixed Asset listings and calculate and record monthly and annual fixed asset entries and reconciliations.

• Participate in month end closing responsibilities as assigned.

• Process, issue and reconcile accounts payable transactions and other miscellaneous payables.

• Review and reconcile Member Company filings.

• Process and summarize annual Member Insurer Reports and assist with calculation of Member Company participation percentages.

• Reconcile and prepare annual 1099s.

• Reconcile and prepare Escheats Reports based on state deadlines.

• Reconcile and prepare annual Property Tax Reports.

• Reconcile and prepare Premium Tax returns.

• Assist in General and Statutory Reporting.

• Provide audit documentation upon request.

 

Other responsibilities

• Promptly assist with all telephone and email consumer, agent and member company inquiries.

• Participate in self-development activities to improve technical knowledge and to develop other required business related skills and abilities.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business preferred with five years of accounting and finance experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

• Knowledge of general ledger accounting software packages.

• Knowledge of account reconciliation and general ledger maintenance.

• Knowledge of MS Office applications required especially excel.

• Insurance or course designations strongly preferred (e.g. AIC, CIC, CPCU).

• Excellent negotiation, organization, and time management skills.

• Outstanding customer service, communication and interpersonal skills required.

• Proven ability to work across all levels of an organization.

• Solid knowledge of technology. 

• Ability to work flexible and occasional extended hours. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Ability to work flexible hours

• Sitting for extended periods of time

• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other  related devices

• Physically able to participate in training sessions, presentations, and meetings

• Periodic local travel, i.e. meetings, seminars, etc., is required

• The office work area is climate controlled and tobacco free
