Position Title:

Material Damage Appraiser

Position Summary:

  • Provides service to all customers and anticipates their need for communication, results and action.
  • Responsible for the prompt, accurate and efficient appraisal and payment of vehicle repair damage and vehicle total loss values, from moderate to severe damage, on all types of vehicles, while exercising independent decision making skills and judgment.

Essential Functions:

  • Receives assignment from Claim Representatives electronically on all types of vehicles.
  • Determines best course of action with regards to vehicle damage evaluation (i.e. Desk review, shop estimate/photo review)
  • Using the documentation available, determines the extent of damage and whether the vehicle is repairable or not economical to repair.
  • Verifies the damage to the vehicle is related to the loss facts given by the Claims Representative.
  • Changes reserves, negotiate agreed repair costs with shops, determines total loss vehicle values and issues payment.
  • Requests photos from owner or shop for in order to write an estimate/supplement or redline a shop estimate/supplement.
  • Contacts customers and shops to setup appraisal appointments.
  • Uploads all work product into the claim and the dispatch system.
  • Documents all correspondence, discussions and decisions in the ACD or claim file.
  • Works closely with Casualty and Auto Physical Damage personnel toward the successful adjustment of first and third party physical damage claims.
  • Notifies the Total Loss Claim Representative of total loss vehicles and, when appropriate, moves the salvage to Copart or other storage free places.
  • Provides guidance to other Claims personnel, assists in their training when asked. Occasionally gives technical direction and authority when requested by Team Manager.
  • Provides quality service to all customers.
  • Any other tasks or responsibilities assigned

SKILLS REQUIRED

Must have a demonstrated analytical ability to review, exercise independent judgment, and evaluate vehicle repairs to make sound decisions.

  • Human relations and communication skills are critical.
  • Must be able to work independently with self-initiative.
  • Thorough knowledge of vehicle repair processes, claim procedures, policies, terminology, state and federal laws, and insurance regulations.
  • Ability to operate business technology.
  • Ability to manage outside resources according to the needs of the file.
  • Sound command of the English language--its grammar, syntax and style, including an understanding of the conventions of punctuation and capitalization.
  • Ability to work effectively with supervision and direction and to exhibit good common sense.
  • Excellent spelling ability and proofreading skills.
  • Effective communication skills; ability to obtain information from others and deliver information to others orally and in written form.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Business math skills.
  • Superior telephone skills.
  • Ability to carry out detailed written or verbal instructions; ability to respond to requests effectively and efficiently; ability to work with little supervision and direction and exhibit good common sense.

EXPERIENCE NEEDED

  • Knowledge of claims handling related state and federal law and insurance regulations.
  • Knowledge of vehicle repair processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computer vehicle estimating programs.
  • Minimum of one year experience estimating vehicle repairs or 3 years in job-related experience.
  • Exceeds expectations in current position.
  • Field experience is desirable

DEGREE/LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS

  • College degree is not a prerequisite for this position
  • Vehicle repair estimating or repair certification (I.e. Vale Tech, CPE, ASE) is beneficial.
  • Valid adjusters' license where required.
