Responsibilities Include:

  • Responds to the press. Vets the story to determine if the NAIC should respond and what the response should be; and explains the reporter’s story angles to manager and NAIC subject matter experts. Research and write talking points as needed. Organizes media interviews and manages, as best as possible, that the NAIC’s position is clearly articulated. Follows up with information requested post interview.
  • Efficiently and effectively manage projects involving quick turnaround requirements.
  • Creates story ideas and writes pro-active media pitches, bylined articles, social media posts, news releases, speeches, and other deliverables. Ensures the writing is clear, delivers the key messages of the NAIC and deliverables are written at the appropriate grade level in the appropriate NAIC voice and tone.
  • Scopes, defines work, timelines and communicates changes and provides updates to the team to ensure successful outcomes. Collaborates with designers and writes copy as requested for NAIC’s branded and owned media, which includes social media, presentation graphics, news stories, consumer alerts, videos, and other electronic communications.
  • Supports the government relations team to develop communications, write talking points, prepare regulators for testimony, generate web posts, and execute promotional activities around conferences. Keeps the communications team up to date on relevant activities relating to issues in committees and working groups to provide a heads up whenever possible.
  • Produces The Regulators podcast. Responsible for pitching ideas, managing production calendar, writing scripts, coordinating with the CEO assistant to schedule guests, recordings, writing social media (including LinkedIn articles) and press release content to amplify the podcast, and editing and posting of the final product.
  • Research issues and writes copy for newsletters and leads the promotion and distribution of Newswire, National Meeting News, campaigns, press releases, reports, and other items as assigned.
  • Research and coordinates projects as requested.
  • Manages editorial calendar and media newsbox. Provides weekly status on current projects/action items and metrics.
  • Maintains confidentiality of private information including but not limited to social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, credit card information, passwords, and PINs (personal information numbers), and other private/confidential information if received during the course of NAIC/NIPR business.  Protects and maintains the security of all confidential data to which this position has access. 

Secondary Functions: Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Research information about insurance topics.
  • Assists in development and implementation of the NAIC public relations plan, annual report, and other communications department initiatives.
  • Assists with photography and videography during Association events.
  • Works with manager and internal interested parties to maintain the About Us section of naic.org.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to work closely with assigned manager, the EVP, Directors, NAIC members, state insurance department staff, and NAIC staff. 
  • Must display strong initiative, excellent time management skills, be highly dependable, proactive, and a self-starter.  Must be politically astute, savvy and be able to maintain strict confidentiality. 
  • Must have an excellent ability to exercise independent, mature judgment and discretion with the ability to work well under pressure. 
  • Must be flexible, and dependable.
  • Exceptional project management/organizational skills, excellent proofreading skills, ability to work in a team environment, ability to meet deadlines, and superior written communication skills are all required. 
  • Excellent working knowledge of the following but not limited to Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web conferencing platforms, podcast platforms and promotional tools, and content management systems as well as knowledge of Quark, Adobe, and/or InDesign.
  • Must be available and willing to travel as the Association determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree in journalism, English or communications from a four-year college or university, and three to eight years’ experience in communications or public relations; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
