Liberty Mutual Surety™ has an excellent opportunity for a Surety Claims Engineer in our King of Prussia office. In this role, you will be responsible for assisting and/or managing technical and construction issues related to performance, payment, and non-contract surety bond disputes and claims. This includes analysis and oversight of the completion of medium to large construction projects with the goal of resolving claims and disputes.

Responsible for technical and construction analyses of performance, payment and non-contract surety bond disputes and claims, including oversight of medium to large completion projects as directed by the Manager.
Prepare technical reports and evaluate the surety's loss exposures in all major bond defaults.
Undertake site inspection of projects, evaluate contract plans and specifications, review expert reports, and construction schedules. Prepare default reports and cost to complete analyses including change orders and proposals, schedule of values, and payment requisitions.
Supervise and coordinate consultants' investigation, analyses and preparation of default reports. Review and approve consultant invoices.
Make recommendations to Surety Counsel as to choice of remedies (default, cure, takeover or relet) and participates in establishing loss and expenses reserves.
Assist in negotiating and settling, tender, takeover, completion, joint escrow, sub-contract and other contractual agreements necessary to discharge surety's obligations, working with Surety Counsel.
As directed, assist counsel on engineering and construction management issues. Assist in pre-trial preparation, mediation, arbitration, alternative dispute resolution, including conducting technical investigative research, interviewing clients and witnesses, acting as an expert witness in technical matters relating to construction contracts, performance and payment bond claims.
As requested by claims or underwriting, participates in visits to contractors to assess internal control structure, job cost systems and reporting capabilities and management oversight of business activities.
Assist in review of project bid-spreads when significant variance is identified by underwriting. This includes securing estimating and bid documentation, known results, contract/RFPs (including drawings and specifications) and interview of lead estimator or equivalent.
Represent Liberty Mutual Surety in key industry related organizations to enhance the image of LMS and promote marketing effectiveness.

- BA/BS Degree in engineering or related field with minimum of 3 years progressively more engineering or construction management experience.
- Proven analytical ability to evaluate construction disputes.
- Demonstrated ability to reduce analyses and information into understandable prose and/or oral directives, for conveyance of situations to other persons in the organization for claims handling or training purposes.
- Exposure to legal process possible.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills required in dealing with claimants, outside counsel, consultants and members of senior management.
- Must be willing to travel and deal with periodic heavy workloads, in an expeditious and professional manner.
