Its mission is to act as a catalyst for Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled innovation across Liberty Mutual, and all of insurance, which includes driving the companys recently established AI Collaboration with one of the top research institutions in the world. Liberty Mutual recognizes that AI is driving the next wave of transformation in the insurance industry across the entire value chain (e.g., underwriting/risk selection, quoting/buying, customer behavior, claims fraud detection) and interdisciplinary collaboration is critical to unlocking its business and societal impact.
Job Summary & Responsibilities:
You will play an instrumental role in driving Liberty Mutuals efforts in its AI Collaboration with a world renowned research institution and in building a dedicated, interdisciplinary team that partners with the enterprise (e.g., business leaders, Product, data scientists, IT) to strategically ideate, develop, and operationalize prioritized AI-enabled innovations.
You will be accountable for sourcing, developing, and guiding innovation projects sourced from all areas of the organization through to execution/implementation, typically in the realm of AI/emerging technologies (e.g., predictive modeling, extreme weather, synthetic datasets, cybersecurity, IoT, computer vision, NLP, fairness, bias). You will work closely with the groups Managing Director (MD) and directly lead, coach, and develop a team to provide strategic guidance and influence the direction of the Collaboration. You will play an instrumental role in driving Liberty Mutuals strategic AI-related innovation efforts and through your work, develop key thought-partner relationships with leaders across the organization.
You will oversee the successful end-to-end delivery of a portfolio of transformational innovation projects and act as an ambassador to key internal and external stakeholders (e.g., business unit leaders, data scientists, IT, distinguished academic professors/researchers). You will coach, mentor, and champion the careers of your direct reports. In turn, the Managing Director will support your development and career aspirations.
Your responsibilities will include:
Acting as a critical driver of Liberty Mutuals efforts in the Collaboration; working with business partners to identify transformational opportunities to apply AI/ML and create value, develop F competitive advantages, and enrich the lives of Liberty Mutuals customers, employees, and partners
Leading the strategic development and prioritization of project proposals, workplans, and research; bringing One Liberty perspective and strategic thinking to maintain the vision and goals of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT)
Managing the successful execution, implementation, and scaling of high impact/complex AI projects, with a keen eye toward shortening the path from research to value creation; partner with appropriate corporate legal counsel to manage the AI patent process with the USPTO, as applicable
Supporting the groups MD to ensure the programs ongoing alignment with company strategic priorities
Building and maintaining a robust pipeline of high-impact project ideas; strategically sourcing and prioritizing ideas from across the organization and partnering with the institution to find areas of common interest
Crafting storylines and presenting complex analytical concepts/strategic findings to senior executives to move the organization to action
Building and cultivating relationships with key stakeholders (e.g., The Office of Data Science, business executives, IT, distinguished professors/researchers)
Individually and within the team, maintaining a strong understanding of ongoing projects/business challenges and potential emerging technological solutions
Surfacing cross-functional challenges/dependencies and directing team and stakeholders towards consensus points/gaining buy-in for complex and uncertain break-through topics
Leading, coaching, and mentoring a high-performing team; inspiring others and collaborating on approaches with the groups MD to resolve challenging relationship situations under tight deadlines
The group is looking for a leader with a strategic mindset, balanced with a desire and capability to achieving results. The leader should have a natural passion for innovation, AI, and the future of insurance. The leader will ideally have a proven track record of driving transformational change in large corporate settings and applying emerging technologies to solve business problems and deliver commercial value at scale.
Ideal candidates will possess:
Undergraduate degree required; advanced business or other quantitative degree (e.g., MSc, PhD, Analytics, MBA) in a related field (e.g., Applied Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Econometrics) from a top-tier institution a plus
7+ years of experience of some combination of predictive analytics, data science, machine learning, optimization, data and analytics consulting, product management (with specialization in innovation, AI, emerging tech), corporate-level innovation; client facing or insurance industry experience a plus
Proven ability to strategize and drive projects to completion; undeterred by challenges/obstacles and will remain motivated and apply creative thinking to overcome them
Credibility and presence among peers and executives and adept at influencing through excellent verbal, analytical, written, and presentation/storyboarding skills
Skilled at applying and advising on state-of-the-art advanced analytic and quantitative tools and modeling techniques in order to derive business insights, solve complex problems, and improve decisions from strategy to execution
Strong critical thinking skills with ability to elevate thinking and apply judgment during analysis about how components fit together and with bigger picture
Strong leadership skills and ability to work independently and to guide and coach a team
Passion for applying innovation, AI, research, and emerging technologies to the commercial world; experience and/or network within the InsurTech, corporate innovation, AI/ML, and insurance communities a plus
Adept at working in a fast-paced, agile environment with incomplete information; able to manage multiple projects/clients concurrently and balance strategic/tactical priorities to advance projects based on known information, judgment, and orchestration of diverse stakeholders
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel; strong understanding and background applying complex algorithms and logic to process data (structured, semi-structured, and unstructured)
