Job Summary:

Accountable, under the direction of the Board of Directors, for the general supervision, management, and control of the affairs of the Georgia Underwriting Association, the residual property insurer for the State of Georgia.  Provides overall strategic and operational direction, setting organization-wide objectives, policies, and procedures.  Plans, directs, and coordinates organizational activities with the assistance of subordinate managers.  Maintains critical working relationships with the Georgia Department of Insurance, agent producers, 3rd party suppliers, standing committees and subcommittees of the Association.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Has authority over an average of 20+ employees.
  • Directs policy application and issuance, underwriting and underwriting surveys, claims handling and other daily activities of the Association. Ensures that all insurance claims are properly investigated and completed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Ensures that all work assignments to staff are equitable. Evaluates the quality and quantity of all work produced.  Prepares and maintains productivity and quality control reports.
  • Oversees the preparation of all management and budget reports required of the Board of Directors, the Georgia Department of Insurance, and outside organizations. Recommends for consideration, implements and is responsible for the achievement of Goals and Objectives for the Association.
  • Directs the gathering of statistical information in accordance with the applicable statistical plans and other required information related to agents’ commissions, company participation, liability reports and municipal tax records.
  • In the event of a catastrophe, ensures that a survey of the area is conducted to estimate losses, establish bulk reserves, and establish a catastrophe claims office.
  • Develops and maintains a liaison with Department of Insurance representatives.  Oversees the preparation of special filings for Department of Insurance approval as directed by the Board of Directors. Communicates with agents, member companies, trade associations, local officials and insureds on matters concerning Association activities.
  • Directs the preparation of the annual budget for the Association and monitors the budget during the year to ensure performance meets requirements.
  • Administers personnel policies, oversees performance evaluations and salary recommendations, interviews prospective employees, hires, terminates and promotes employees as deemed appropriate. Performs other administrative and operational responsibilities as required or assigned by the Board of Directors.
  • Oversees daily operation of the Georgia Arson Control Program. This includes the Arson Consultant, the Arson Rewards Program and financial reporting to the Arson Control Board.

Qualifications:

Required: 

  • Must have at least ten years of management experience with a property & casualty insurer.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university.
  • Strong business acumen skills in underwriting, accounting, claims, reinsurance and technology are vital.
  • Demonstration of effective management (leadership, organization and communication) skills are essential.
  • Experience in the management and oversight of 3rd party suppliers.

Preferred: 

  • Experience in residual market operations and procedures is desirable.
  • Insurance designation such as CPCU, AIM or ARe are advantages.
  • In-depth property insurance knowledge is ideal.
