Job Description Summary

Under general oversight, responsible for the strategy execution and operating decisions which provide for profitability, growth and retention of Travelers Canada Middle Market business (Commercial Accounts, Construction, Technology, Oil & Gas and Ocean Marine) consistent with overall Travelers North American Business Insurance and Enterprise objectives. Has responsibility for the profit & loss working closely with Business Insurance leadership team. This job is a manager of managers.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • STRATEGY
  • Provides a clear vision of the future and translates the vision into realistic business strategies.
  • Accountable to execute on the commercial Middle Market businesses strategy on a national level.
  • Oversees the underwriting of new and renewal business.
  • Leads the field underwriting team, communicating the expectations, coaching and developing the team and overall management of performance.
  • Works as a member of the Business Insurance senior leadership team and helps to set the overall strategy for commercial insurance ensuring alignment with business unit and company objectives that grow and retain profitable book(s) of business.
  • UNDERWRITING & PRICING
  • In partnership with North America BI leadership team, develops a strategic business plan to achieve overall profit and growth objectives for the business and company, leveraging the Travelers commercial insurance actuarial and underwriting teams.
  • Negotiates the most complex, at risk, or hard to close deals as needed.
  • Identifies creative solutions to complex issues that satisfy all parties.
  • Provides direction and coaching to successfully close the most difficult deals.
  • SALES, DISTRIBUTION & BROKER MANAGEMENT
  • Effectively manages local strategies, objectives and tactics concerning relationships with brokers with respect to middle market and specialty business, including MGA relationships.
  • Effectively leverages strong relationships with our broker partners and key clients to support the overall business plan.
  • Practices, promotes and inspires behaviors inherent to a successful consultative marketing/sales culture.

  • LEADING OTHERS
  • In addition to leading self, effectively manages all facets of staff performance to achieve business objectives.

  • Manages performance and provides honest, constructive feedback.
  • Encourages others to seek solutions to business problems that optimize the results and performance across the Enterprise.
  • Effectively drives a collaborative business approach and fosters enterprise-wide solutions to regional issues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7 years of underwriting experience required.
  • Prior experience managing underwriting for a region or across multiple locations required.

Education, Work Experience, & Knowledge

  • Bachelor degree preferred.
  • Business leadership experience required with proven track record of delivering results.
  • 10 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Exhibits a thorough understanding of global insurance trends, industry/ customer based trends and enterprise wide business and financial drivers that affect the region.

Licensing or Certificates

  • CIP/FCIP preferred
