The Surplus Line Association of California is seeking a full-time Specialist in our Education and Compliance department who will be responsible for researching regulatory related matters, assisting in the development of compliance programs and organizing educational events for insurance license renewal & continuing education requirements and proving compliance related assistance regarding surplus line laws and requirements on behalf of the members of the Surplus Line Association of California (SLA).

  • Demonstrate knowledge and provide expertise on the California Insurance Code, specifically sections that pertain to regulation of surplus line licensing, transaction filing requirements and surplus line tax submissions.
  • Correspond with the licensing and tax divisions of the California Department of Insurance (CDI) on member questions and concerns.
  • Confer with manager regarding any areas of the California Insurance Code and California Code of Regulations that are vague or unclear and liaise with the CDI and SLA legal counsel to request an opinion or recommendation if needed.
  • Educate members on California surplus line regulations regarding licensing, filing, and tax related issues.
  • Research, recommended and identify potential topics for insurance continuing education course and compliance events, seminars and on-demand training.
  • Submit course material to the California Department of Insurance for continuing education approval. Course materials include course outline and objectives, schedules, and speaker qualification.
  • Obtain Associate In Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI) certification within two years of hire. Time, costs and materials will be provided by the Association.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 2-3 years comparable work experience
  • Surplus lines experience preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Research Skills.
  • Detail Oriented (systematic and thoroughly review the course process is required as standards and guidelines are strictly adhered too).
  • Strong interpersonal skills with excellent communication skills (both oral and written) are essential to effectively manage relationships with a diverse group of constituents.
  • Ability to follow detailed verbal and/or written instructions to accommodate a wide variety of course filing requirements.
  • The ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Willing to research, retain and communicate detailed state-specific licensing information.
