Job Description

The Operational Risk Director is a Second Line of Defense role, responsible for advancing the maturity of the Operational Risk and Return Management (ORRM) program, furthering a culture of prudence and risk awareness through communication, training and facilitation. ORRM is responsible for contributing to the ongoing evolution of the enterprise Operational Risk Management Framework (ORMF) and overseeing its implementation across the enterprise. The ORMF includes governance, standards, risk process and tools through which ORRM directs, assists and challenges management to identify and assess risk, mitigate risk in accordance with appetite and analyze and understand the risk environment overall. The Director assists and leads staff to independently advise and challenge the business as they implement the ORMF within their organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote risk management practice and culture to strengthen the operational risk environment of Allstate
  • Review business processes and analyze operational risk data to identify areas of increased operational risk at Allstate.
  • Plan and conduct operational risk, deep dive assessments from a second line perspective
  • Participate in governance and project meetings related to operational risk and control matters and promote an open environment for collaboration, risk identification and mitigation
  • Participate in working groups to provide risk oversight and guidance as needed during operational process design, remediation programs, etc.
  • Manage a team of ORRM analysts responsible for understanding the risk environment and guiding/directing the Risk Control Self-Assessment processes, Key Risk & Performance Indicators and event management of specific internal clientele.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline risk assessment processes to increase operational efficiency and operational risk effectiveness at Allstate.
  • Identify and assess severity and likelihood of issues for potential escalation and communication to Business Executives and Senior Risk Managers
  • Identify and engage appropriate stakeholders to facilitate targeted deep dives, thematic reviews and any additional directives from senior leadership.
  • Manage a team of analysts within a wider matrix team where individual team members are expected to take leadership on assigned topics and drive change.
  • Work collaboratively with key stakeholders in the business to facilitate the acceptance of change throughout Allstate.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • 10 or more years of related experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; Advanced degree(s) welcome

Functional Skills

  • In-depth understanding of operational risk and governance; proven success at achieving enterprise business outcomes and implementing strategic change
  • Expertise in one or more key operational risk categories: model, business continuity, vendor, data privacy, technology, cyber, fraud.
  • Highly developed relationship management, influencing and leadership skills
  • Experienced people leader; experienced in establishing operational and strategic objectives for direct reports as well as matrixed resources.
  • Advanced program/project management skills
  • Advanced organizational, verbal, and written communication skills and ability to lead and influence at all levels.
  • Some travel required

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Operational risk certifications (RMA, PRMIA, GARP, ERMA, IMA, ISACA etc.) not required but encouraged
