Liberty Mutual Surety is growing and has an exciting new opportunity for a strong Construction-based Surety Engineer or Surety Account Analyst, based on experience/background. This key role is part of our Professional Advisory Services in-house consultancy team, and is preferably based in King of Prussia, PA. Requires frequent travel with workloads that need to be prioritized and handled in an expeditious and professional manner.

The Surety Engineer brings extensive construction engineering and project financial reporting experience, preferably with a Surety company or as a consultant, and will focus on the technical engineering and construction analysis of accounts that vary in size and complexity. Will also consider experience with a sizable contractor or construction management firm.

The Surety Account Analyst has a proven background working in a like-capacity for a Surety company or partner firm or has prior work experience working in a construction practice for a National/International, or large Regional Accounting firm or consultancy group, and is responsible for assessing the financial and operational strength of our accounts, including their reporting capabilities and the quality of their projections.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform project bid spread reviews and analysis on significant variances in estimated costs and will provide bid commentary/risk analysis on atypical projects to our underwriting teams

  • Lead, conduct and participate in hands-on account and customer-facing visits to assess the quality and capabilities of the following:

    • Internal Control (including policies and procedures)
    • Job Cost, Project Management and Accounting Systems
    • Job Cost and Financial Reporting Capabilities
    • Senior Management Oversight
    • Activities of the Estimating, Project Management, Finance and other relevant departments
  • Conduct complex engineering analysis utilizing expert technical construction knowledge or complex accounting and financial analysis utilizing expert technical/construction accounting knowledge.

  • Prepare/create written reports that highlights identified opportunities for improvement and/or significant deficiencies in the areas most critical to the prosecution of and reporting on construction projects.

  • Provide guidance and/or solutions on surety underwriting issues, including pre-bid technical analysis to Underwriting where the prospective project has unusual and/or atypical elements within the bonded scope of work.

  • Review project bid-spreads when significant variance is identified by underwriting, which involve securing and reviewing the underlying estimating documentation that serves as the base for the bid, known results, contract/RFPs [including drawings and specifications] and interviewing the of head estimator or equivalent. Conduct further independent testing and verification of the estimated cost data provided and prepare a written report of the analysis as appropriate.

  • May provide oversight and/or management to a team of Surety Account Analysts and Engineers based on previous experience and level of role.

  • Attend/represent Liberty Mutual Surety at industry related functions and promote marketing effectiveness.
  • Provide internal training for Underwriters
  • Special projects as assigned.

*Please note: Level of position and compensation based on prior experience. Will consider alternative locations on a case-by-case basis.

Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in engineering or related field typically required.
  • A minimum of 7 years with a preference of 10 + years progressive responsibility in construction management, engineering or construction finance/accounting or a comparable surety role expected. Prior experience working for a national or regional accounting firm construction practice or engineering firm in a similar capacity, ideally within the Surety industry.

  • Engineers bring extensive experience with estimating, project management and job costing systems and utilization strongly preferred.

  • Accountants require an expert understanding of construction - financial analysis and construction accounting, including project costs, and projections (cost to complete and cash flow). This includes managing audit engagements and/or in a position of managing the various aspects internal to construction contractor; demonstrates advanced level knowledge of internal control and job cost system evaluations, and financial statement presentations and exposure to various software applications utilized for estimating, scheduling, project management and accounting; and knowledge of current business tax law and GAAP is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to reduce complex analyses and information into understandable prose for conveyance of situations to internal and external customers for use in underwriting decisions, training or claims handling or other purposes.

  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills required in dealing with clients, accounts, consultants and members of senior management.

  • Ability to present at key external industry events and internal meetings.

  • Must be willing to travel up-to 40%, dealing with periodic heavy workloads in an expeditious and professional manner.
