The Liberty Mutual Global Retail Markets (GRM) US Technology Information Management (IM) team is seeking a passionate data practitioner and leader as Director, Data Management Engineering. This leader has a passion and depth in data operational efficiency and effective data management of data environments – platforms and tools. This leader with inspire data engineering teams to build solutions to drive data quality, security and effectively manage and monitor the data ecosystem of analytics, data lakes, warehouses and MDM platforms and tools. You will be central to the effective running and sustainment of all GRM US data platforms including petabytes of data and numerous data tools and technologies. This role reports to the VP & Senior Director for Information Management within GRM US.

About the role:

  • Create a strong partnership with the Product Owners (PO) and leadership for Data Management technologies for “well managed” and effective data platform and tools operations.
  • Lead your team in building data management solutions which span all data platforms – MDM, data lake (relational, NoSQL), data warehouse (Teradata or new technologies) and data tools (Data Visualization, Data Catalog, Data Virtualization and Advanced Analytics/Data Science).
  • Build-out new or transform existing Data Management tools or processes including protecting data as an asset (security, compliance, audit, etc.), data quality and governance, central monitoring, data cataloging and reference data or MDM functions.
  • Partner closely with other IM teams to ensure data management and quality are built-in up front.
  • Be an evangelist across IM department for data quality and overall security, stable, reliable systems and engineering excellence.
  • Own creation and execution of plans for application and data asset retirement of technical debt as well as enterprise initiatives like data center migrations or moves.
  • Build and motivate a team of scrum masters, administrators, engineers, and technologists in a fun work environment to drive high standards of achievement as “one data team” across the business and technology.
  • Partner with IM Portfolio leadership on release management function and to drive team to mature and scaled agile processes, consistent metrics and efficient processes.
  • Build collaborative relationships with IT technology peers in the area of IT Operations and GRM US Engineering Enablement and Operations teams to ensure solutions alignment and partnership with Agile Excellence coaches.
  • Devise talent strategy for the team – identify resource gaps or inefficiencies, build hiring plan, recommend promotions and manage performance for consistency with the needs and vision of the department.
  • Define individual performance objectives and development plans and ensure alignment with project and department objectives.
  • Initiate and foster business partnerships with current and potential clients, vendors, IT executives, and senior business executives; develops relationships that promote trust and increase efficiency and effectiveness; balances individual client needs with business priorities assuring alignment with the business strategies and objectives.
  • Establish financial plan for department and manage to plan; ensures project financial plans are met by managers in department. Jointly establishes financial targets with business partners.
  • Develop and maintain a network of industry contacts; performs or directs research on industry trends, competitors, business and IT products; analyzes trends and makes strategic and tactical recommendations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in technical or business discipline or related experience; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Ten (10) or more years hands-on experience effectively managing data platforms, data tools and/or depth in data management technologies.
  • Proactive leadership skills with (5) five or more years people leadership experience.
  • Working knowledge of tools and technologies to support Data Management – DQM, data governance metadata management, reference/master data management, data modeling, data catalog or related tools (Erwin or ER Studio, Alation).
  • A “bar-raiser” mentality and are driven to motivate and lead teams to achieve great things.
  • Passion for operational efficiency, quantitative performance metrics and process orientation.
  • Depth of knowledge in operationalizing data governance and providing measurable DQM.
  • Working knowledge of project planning methodologies, IT standards and guidelines.
  • Customer passion, business focus and the ability to negotiate, facilitate and build consensus.
  • The ability to promote a team environment across a large set of separate agile teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong team management, financial / budget management, organizational, communication and presentation skills.
  • Effective vendor and offshore staffing expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with ITSM tools such as Service Now, Remedy.
  • Experience with Teradata, Informatica, Power BI, Tableau and MicroStrategy.
  • Experience with AWS data lake technologies – S3, EMR, Athena, Glacier.
  • Experience with data virtualization technologies.
  • ITIL Certification.
  • Certifications in Agile development methodologies or PMP.
