Job Description

Claims Learning & Development team provides strategic education to the claims business, including field staff, home office staff, and other stakeholders. The team is responsible for the execution in the analysis, design, development, implementation, measurement, and coordination of high impact learning solutions.

The Learning & Development Director manages and directs all technical learning & development activities and resources for claims and its stakeholders. The role partners with Senior Leadership to establish and define educational needs, processes and initiatives. The Director leads the design and development of education strategies to help achieve claims business goals and Allstate corporate goals, drawing upon adult learning expertise and knowledge of the business. The claims Learning & Development Director manages claims’ Learning & Development team (instructional designers, centralized services training, field training, and tech-cor training), outside vendors, e-learning and virtual platforms) for maximum efficiency and effectiveness. The Director also establishes and evaluates metrics for assessing education effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Execution

  • With knowledge of the goals of Claims organization, responsible for setting educational vision for the Claims enterprise, executing on that vision, measuring/reporting educational effectiveness
  • Works with team to ensure appropriate consistency in learning approach
  • Provides strategic guidance/direction on learning, sales/business development programs, processes, and initiatives
  • Establishes/tracks department performance
  • Directs the development/design of new plans, learning programs or processes that are of high complexity, across many geographical locations/functional areas
  • Develops cost/benefit analysis for key learning projects and effectively manages learning budget
  • Develops communication strategies/materials to support new plans/processes
  • Solicits/integrates input from key stakeholders
  • Proactively evaluates procedures and processes regularly and determines/recommends alternatives or improvements
  • Ensures processes are followed and applied consistently
  • Evaluates/implements process improvements to internal and external compliance requirements
  • Effectively administers curriculum & costs related to Continuing Education credits
  • Ensures effective delivery of course materials through a variety of mediums

Leadership

  • Creates a vision for a team and assist in enrolling others in that vision
  • Interprets broad goals and objectives into team priorities and activities
  • Coaches, mentors and influences others to accomplish departmental goals
  • Actively assesses, monitors, and develops staff competencies and bench strength for department
  • Promotes and fosters an inclusive and engaging environment for employees
  • Represents Allstate on panels, in outside venues or forums

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Dynamic leadership and relationship skills. Highly collaborative with proven ability to build rapport and credibility quickly with all levels of the organization and work across matrixed organizations.
  • Ability to strive in an evolving, fluid, entrepreneurial environment and be cultural change agent, driving innovation and urgency, both internal to claims and across the Allstate enterprise
  • Knowledge of Allstate’s organization structure; who to go to, and how to position the situation, to maximize odds of achieving claims’ desired outcome
  • Experience in running large and complex operations; as well as maintaining a controlled and quality oriented environment
  • Track record of building and cultivating great teams, attracting top talent and driving succession plans
  • Creative thought leader, exceptional problem solving and analytical skills with proven ability to conceptualize new ideas
  • Excellent customer focus; able to understand customer needs, think strategically and provide innovative solutions
  • Ability to set and manage accountabilities and expectations at all levels - team members, peers, business partners and senior and executive management
  • Proven program / project oversight capabilities
  • Either verbally or through written presentation, can effectively distill a complex business situation in to easily understood, actionable management information

Experience

  • 10+ years of strategic leadership in the design, development and implementation of learning solutions across multiple platforms
  • 7+ years of experience in small commercial lines P&C industry
  • Master’s degree in adult education, instructional design
  • 10+ years of proven mid-level or senior leadership skills
  • Excellent written, verbal skills and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interact with senior leaders and represent claims with customers and business partners
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
