Liberty Mutual’s Global Risk Solutions strategic business unit has centralized its vast mergers & acquisitions (M&A) and Tax Liability insurance solutions expertise into its newly formed Global Transaction Solutions group (GTS).


The creation of GTS enables Liberty Mutual to provide innovative solutions in the rapidly emerging global transactional risk insurance solutions market by making it easier for brokers and buyers to access a range of effective M&A and Tax Liability products from a financially strong partner. GTS operates as a global, stand-alone business unit, providing its brokers and clients with centralized M&A and Tax expertise across a global platform backed by expert, dedicated M&A claims handling.


Rowan Bamford, President GTS Global M&A, leads GTS, which offers representations and warranties/warranty and indemnity, tax liability, tax credit and contingent risk insurance.

Key responsibilities


This tax underwriter role is to be based in New York and provides a rare opportunity to develop your career as part of a market-leading, dedicated team of underwriting professionals. We are looking for an intelligent and enthusiastic candidate to work within our regional New York team to underwrite transaction tax liability risks throughout the region.


GTS is proud of its reputation for training and developing staff and as such, this role offers great potential for an individual with a strong legal or M&A background interested in establishing or further developing expertise in this exciting and growing sector of the insurance market. The successful candidate will attend to the following responsibilities:


  • Underwriting tax liability insurance risks including:
    • assessing tax risks
    • reviewing transaction related deal documentation, sale and purchase agreements and due diligence reports/materials from a tax perspective
    • negotiating and finalising policy wording and coverage.
  • Working as part of a joined up New York team of underwriters as well as independently to lead underwriting of transactions.
  • Ensuring that brokers and clients receive a high level of underwriting service and certainty of execution that differentiates GTS from its competitors.
  • Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with brokers and clients to facilitate deal appointments.
  • Assisting the team to build the Liberty GTS brand through marketing and business development opportunities.
  • Providing technical training and guidance to other junior members of the team.
  • Continuing to seek improvement of the product and its practices and processes.
  • Contributing to an effective team environment by interacting professionally with all team members in line with GTS core values.



Qualifications and Soft Skills


  • Previous solid legal experience in corporate M&A Tax or tax liability insurance (6+ years) from a well regarded accounting or law firm.
  • Sound decision making and analytical skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Strong legal drafting skills and broad understanding of legal concepts.
  • Interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Business, financial and risk awareness/understanding a plus.
  • Legal degree (preferably in a common law jurisdiction).





Skills and Experience:

  • Extensive knowledge of the corporate M&A tax market

  • 8 plus years of US M&A tax and international tax experience with a leading law firm/accounting firm

  • Strong knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements

  • Strong knowledge of M&A transaction documentation

  • Intermediate/ advanced level understanding of relevant software including Excel and other departmental software packages

  • Strong level of numeracy and literacy skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Strong negotiation skills

  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills

  • Ability to analyze and use data for decision making

  • Strong attention to detail

  • People management – ability to engage and lead a team

  • Degree or equivalent qualification desired – e.g. ACII

  • Experience gained within the insurance industry (preferred)

  • Established customer/broker relationships (preferred)
