Job Summary
The primary function of this position is to provide architectural and technological leadership, oversight, recommendations and transition strategies that support the development and implementation of highly complex systems in support the business application portfolio in our Corporate & Shared Systems (CSS) division.
The initial assignment will be in the Billing and Payments area, where Travelers is transforming the existing high-volume billing and payments systems into a modern platform that can go the distance.

This role will act as part of the Billing and Payments agile team, working closely with the product owner, the delivery leader and team and internal consumers of billing and payment services to identify needs, formulate potential alternatives, assess their impact, and select solutions. A particular focus will be establishing the steps to achieve the vision, including helping establish incremental functional delivery and the delivery architectural runway enablers.
Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Has master level knowledge of multiple programming disciplines
- Has previous experience with important financial applications
- Has conceptual knowledge of varying technologies
- Able to drive to consensus on technical challenges
- Strong analysis skills - ability to dig in and understand complex models and business processes
- Demonstrated ability to translate business processes and requirements to applicable requirement types (functional, technical, etc.) and design
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills are a must, as well as the ability to work effectively across internal and external organizations and virtual team.
Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
- Ability to serve as a senior technologist and architectural advisor directly influencing a large information technology organization via your strong technical leadership.
- Ability to perform as a lead technologist to masterfully assess and design applications, systems solutions, and interfaces for multiple systems.
- Skilled with broad, conceptual understanding of the technology architecture trends and directions coupled with demonstrated technical mastery for technologies, frameworks, and/or languages.
- Ability to influence and set technical direction.
- Skilled at contributing and communicating your expert knowledge of applications/systems and concepts to a broader audience.
- Ability to architect end-to-end solutions across distributed, host and business intelligence environments
- Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) experience a plus
- Ability to influence teams to a future state while understanding the need to make practical decisions along the way. Strong ability to create a following amongst a technical group.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
- 9 years of programming/development experience preferred.
- 2 years of experience as a technical lead preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent required. 5 years of experience in enterprise, application, and/or information architecture required. 1 year of experience as a technical lead required.
Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred. 7 years of experience in enterprise, application, and/or information architecture preferred. 3 years of experience as a technical lead preferred. Experience managing others preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiar with Agile Development Methodology, ideally including Scaled Agile Framework.
- Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery practices and tools
- Experience with Java, Spring Boot
- Experience with microservice development
- Prior exposure or experience to/with CICS, COBOL, DB2, job scheduling
- Familiar and experience a plus with Cloud native on PCF
- Familiar and experience a plus with Public Cloud (e.g. AWS, Azure or Google Cloud Platform)
