The Regional Medical Director position is an opportunity to join our industry leading team at Liberty Mutual in Managed Care Workers Compensation Claims group, reporting to the National Medical Director. We are looking for a talented Medical Doctor to be responsible for the development of evidence-based medical treatment guidelines, quality assurance review, public affairs participation and to engage directly with customers and national organizations as a thought leader in workers compensation. Our department is aligned with injured worker advocacy and product innovation. Responsibilities:


  • Review medical treatments for complex claims referred by case management nurses, discuss claims management with treating MD where appropriate, advise LM RNs on appropriate action.
  • Respond to daily Q&As submitted via iCase Manager and update archived library of Q&As to insure currency.
  • Review external guidelines for use at LM and modify as appropriate. Develop and update LM guidelines and policies to meet specific needs as identified by National Medical Director.
  • Ensure medical accuracy and quality by reviewing samples of peer reviews and IMEs provided by outside vendors, reviews performed by other LM medical directors, reviews by UM/CM nurses, and other internal QA activities as required by URAC and other accrediting bodies.
  • Assist National Medical Director with oversight/review of clinical content for LM training programs and participate in training of new clinical personnel (MDs, RNs).
  • Explore and disseminate significant updates/changes in LM medical policies to claims managers and CM nurses.
  • Participate in and provide medical advice to LM committees with various missions, and task forces relating to specific issues/problems.
  • Serve as a medical resource for a variety of activities at LM, including Legal, Public Affairs, Loss Prevention and Sales & Marketing.



Qualifications:


Collaborative and team skills are required - there is a significant amount of work involving cross-functional initiatives. Clinical experience as well as utilization management and/or insurance or population medicine experience is preferred. Strong interpersonal and telephonic communication skills and ability to be decisive and able to articulate reasoning supporting decisions. Strong computer skills are. Prefer knowledge of utilization management process, clinical protocols and diplomat status with the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. Requires board certified, licensed, practicing physician (MD or DO) with at least five years of clinical practice experience. Will preferably be an Orthopedic Surgeon or have extensive experience with orthopedic injuries, Occupational medicine, primary care or pain management. Experience with workplace issues, short and long term disability, and workers compensation.
