Global Retail Markets Actuarial US Reserving is seeking a Senior Managing Actuary responsible for evaluating the adequacy of held reserves of our US long-tailed lines of business (Auto Liability, GL/Umbrella, and WC).

This position is responsible for evaluating over $12B of Personal and Business Lines direct reserves and manages a team of 16, including three managers. This role is focused on protecting the GRM US balance sheet via early and effective recognition and communication of key trends and risks to the GRM Chief Actuary, as well as to other senior leaders within GRM. Other responsibilities include expanding the use of advanced analytics and sophisticated reserving techniques, including predictive models, in making ACE selections and the development of reasonable ACE ranges. This person will lead process improvement initiatives to support reserving unit goals and cross-functional needs. The successful actuary will possess strong analytical and communication skills as well as a demonstrated ability to execute thoroughly in a collaborative environment. This position will report to Kristen Goodrich, Chief Reserving Actuary of GRM Actuarial.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and own reserve opinions and adequacy assessments for long-tailed lines, having in depth knowledge of the balance sheet

  • Communicate results to Senior Management, clearly articulating drivers of results and areas of uncertainty

  • Partner with Claims and Product Management to understand operational changes and impacts on reserve patterns and adequacy

  • Support the financial planning process by providing key actuarial inputs and ranges around those selections

  • Quickly recognize and effectively communicate to key stakeholders the trends that affect reserve development

  • Monitor and analyze GRM US and industry trends to ensure reserve estimates incorporate the impact of ongoing changes in the legal and operational environment

  • Work closely with external parties, such as auditors, to explain our processes, controls, and results

  • Enhance interactions with key stakeholders, soliciting feedback on changes and driving implementation

  • Provide employees with regular feedback and coaching, and ensure they understand performance expectations

  • Champion innovation and continuous improvement in GRM Actuarial. Expand the use of advanced reserving techniques and methods

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) required, or comparable actuarial education/designation combined with relevant experience

  • Demonstrated ability to apply the depth/breadth of actuarial skills and business acumen with 7 or more years of progressively responsible actuarial experience, including managerial experience

  • Detailed knowledge of personal and business lines preferred, along with a solid understanding of casualty actuarial reserving techniques, standards, and assumptions

  • Experience with the use of predictive models (e.g., claim-level reserve development models) a plus

  • Experience with ResQ software a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing

  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate areas of senior management concern, integrate different perspectives, and respond accordingly

  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior management

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills required to establish and build effective relationships within and outside the organization

  • Ability to drive teamwork and collaboration across departments and functions

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, develop, and delegate to team members
