Job Details

Responsibilities:

Responsible for managing a team of property and casualty underwriting personnel through planning, organizing, leading, and monitoring underwriting activities. Achieves efficient operation of assigned staff through hiring and training of personnel, ensuring compliance with guidelines and performance standards, and communicating department and company objectives to staff.  

Provides underwriting personnel with leadership, guidance, and motivation to achieve desired results. Conducts employee performance reviews and establishes and monitors employee development goals.

Monitors adherence to property and casualty underwriting guidelines of assigned agents and underwriting personnel. Communicates underwriting rules, guidelines, and philosophy to agents and staff.  Delegates to staff the responsibility for underwriting business, but personally underwrites risks that exceed the authority level of the staff. 

Works with Quality Assurance and Training to review audit results of underwriters to ensure consistent application of guidelines, compliance with regulatory requirements, and compliance with customer experience service standards.  Reviews the audit results with underwriting staff and provides guidance. 

Makes difficult and potentially unpopular decisions and responds to requests for exceptions from established guidelines.

Responsible for ensuring fair and equitable treatment of agents by underwriting staff.   

Represents the company at industry events and conducts agency visits when required. 

Performs other related duties as directed.

Underwriting Manager I

Requirements:

Bachelor degree preferred, high school diploma or equivalent required, and 7 - 10 years of personal lines underwriting experience in Texas. CPCU preferred.

Minimum of 3 years property and casualty management experience.

Experience in all aspects of Property/Casualty underwriting, encompassing risk evaluation and selection, rating, servicing and control is preferred.

Professional understanding of underwriting policies and goals and the ability to effectively manage an underwriting team.

 

Knowledge of Texas property and casualty coverages written by standard and specialty insurance carriers including:

a. Exposures inherent to each type of policy

b. Limitations and exclusions

c. Risk selection standards

d.Rating criteria

 

Basic knowledge of treaty and facultative reinsurance including:

 a. Purpose of various types of contracts

 b Interpretation of contract wording

 c. Application of the reinsurance program

 

Knowledge of regulatory policies and practices including:

a. Farm Mutuals

b. Pools and associations

 c. TDI Rating structure and process

d.  Texas Insurance Code and Texas Administrative Code rules and prohibited practices for regulated lines

 

Knowledge of personnel administration including:

a. Ability to select, train and supervise staff through interview, counseling and coaching techniques

b. Ability to motivate staff through setting standards, proper communication, recognition, consistent disciplinary action and performance appraisal.

c. Delegation of authority and responsibility

 

Exhibit ability to communicate effectively by:

a. Listening to others and understanding their points of view

b. Keeping others informed on matters affecting them

c. Expressing thoughts (oral and written) so they are understood

d. Ability to conduct effective oral presentations

 

Broad knowledge of the risk management process through:

a.  Identifying and analyzing loss exposures

b.  Selecting the techniques or combination of techniques to be used to handle exposures

 c.  Implementing the techniques chosen, and

d. Monitoring the decisions made and implementing appropriate changes

e. Exhibit self-control by remaining calm under conditions of stress.

f. Working knowledge of a PC.
