As a centralized function of Examining, Litigation, Fire Investigation & Complex Claims, this role works in collaboration with claims senior leadership to design service, severity, and expense solutions to achieve optimal results in handling, examining and litigation resolution of specialty lines or large loss claims. The activities of this operation are managed to deliver quality claims service to customers, while protecting the assets of the Company; with total approval authority of $1.5 million.


Responsibilities:


  • Ensures effective management of multiple specialty or large loss claims handlers and/or examiners in the review, analysis, investigation, negotiation and settlement of large or specialty lines claims. These claims include Personal and Business Lines first party and third-party property losses.
  • Leads teams of PL and BL examiners responsible for consulting and providing technical oversight and advice, with the chief responsibility of how to recognize emerging risks, mitigate corporate risk and protect corporate assets.
  • Leads a team of claims handlers responsible for PL and BL first party and third-party property claims that are in suit, including bringing them to trial, mediation or appraisal, ensuring the most expeditious and equitable resolution.
  • Directs a team of credentialed fire investigators responsible for the determination of origin and cause on first- and third-party Business Lines and Personal Lines claims.
  • Works with management levels within Home Office Legal, Actuarial, Product and Underwriting to formulate strategy for handling current losses and mitigating future risk.
  • Develops, recommends and ensures the execution of projects, policies, litigation activities, systems and procedures to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of claims handling operations.
  • Responsible for review and approval of Subrogation claims settlements in excess of Subrogation Department authority.
  • Works with Public Affairs to develop responses to government mandates and media inquiries.
  • Coordinate with other departments on questionable risks and claims handling protocols.
  • Prepare, recommend and manage annual budget to ensure appropriate resource allocations and expense levels.
  • Monitor and evaluate claim reserve practices and ensures that actual reserves are accurate and established promptly to make certain that the financial position of the company is properly stated.
  • Prepare and distribute management reports analyzing and documenting



Qualifications:


Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, plus a minimum of 10 years of progressively more responsible related work experience required. Prior experience as a Claims Manager overseeing large losses and litigated claims. Thorough knowledge of company operating structure, management team, insurance products and claims policies and procedures to ensure appropriate determination of obligations and prompt settlements. General understanding of company insurance systems and Technology support. Industry certifications preferred (e.g. AEI, IIA, CPCU). People management skills including interviewing skills, training, performance management and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing at all levels of the organization and clearly and concisely express opinions, conclusions and recommendations.
