North American Specialty (NAS) Actuarial is seeking an actuary to lead and support the Stop Lines business pricing function. The role will involve working closely with the Senior Managing Actuary, NAS-Health and Chief UW Officer, Stop Loss to develop portfolio level pricing strategies. Primary responsibilities will include producing profitability reviews, semi-annually, Planning and producing monthly reports showing updated loss ratios and emerged claims frequency on the Stop Loss and Provider Excess books. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical and communication skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to execute thoroughly in a collaborative environment

What will you be responsible for?

As the Actuary/ Senior Actuary - NAS - Health - Stop Loss Pricing, you will lead the team by participating in Multidisciplinary (Claims, Actuarial, UW, Finance) reviews of the Stop Loss portfolio.

You will be responsible for transactional pricing: evaluation and pricing of large Stop Loss accounts

You will be responsible for portfolio analysis: in-depth reviews of the portfolios composition and profitability

You will work with rate models: maintenance and enhancement of existing models and development of new models as necessary

You will be responsible for parameter studies: periodic data-driven reviews of pricing parameters

You will need to present clearly results of actuarial analyses to underwriters and claims personnel

You will participate in discussions with lead Underwriters and Claims personnel regarding profitability and strategic direction

You will participate in the reinsurance placement process as necessary

You will respond to ad hoc analysis requests from Underwriting, Claims, and senior management

You will assist in the due diligence of prospective MGA Programs, including onsite MGA visits

You will develop a consistent set of monitoring tools across all Programs to assess the profitability of the business, and if necessary, recommending underwriting or rating actions to make the business more profitable

You will participate in MGA audits and discussions with MGA management on program positioning and profitability


What are the ideal qualifications?
  • 10 plus years of actuarial experience, preferably in Stop Loss business
  • Experience in pricing Stop Loss business, familiarity with David Young System (DYS), SQL Databases & Querie
  • ACAS, ASA designation, FCAS, FSA designation preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to discuss analysis and observations with non-technical audiences and a desire to interact directly with Underwriting, Claims, Finance including Corporate Reserving, Senior Management, IT, Program Administrators and Reinsurers
  • The ambition to integrate the pricing actuarial function into the underwriting side of the business so that the actuarial perspective is viewed as a critical component of the strategic direction of the business
  • Strong technical and computer skills, an interest in data (collection, manipulation, report design, sensibility checks), and attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of R
  • Ability to work independently and run multiple projects simultaneously
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, fluid environment
