SB Underwriting Practices Analyst Job Summary

Salary Range: $63,367 - $72,872 - $82,377


The SB Underwriting Practices Analyst, working under moderate supervision, is responsible for performing analyses, monitoring, and providing recommendations in support of the automated and transactional underwriting and pricing decisions in the small business (SB) segment. Works closely with and supports the SB Underwriting Practices Manager ensuring the achievement of target financial metrics and pass through rates that drive profitability, growth, and operational efficiency.

Essential Functions (primary functions and/or reasons the job exists in order of importance)
1. Assists the Underwriting Practices Manager through analysis in ensuring the quality and integrity of automated and transactional underwriting and pricing decisions in the small business segment.
2. Monitors and provides recommendations of risk prequalification, underwriting rules, account pricing, product eligibility, authority/ referral rules and automated workflows.
3. Analyzes various data and information to provide input and recommendations.
a. Analyzes risk exposures and controls to assist with the effective monitoring, modifying, and creating of underwriting rules to drive profitability in the SB segment.
b. Analyzes underwriting rules, loss trends, and emerging issues. Utilizes this information to provide input to the strategic direction for improving specific lines of business and industries.
c. Analyzes and leverages risk insights, data, advanced analytics, performance of products and lines of business, and identification of trends to support informed decisions regarding underwriting rules and automation.
d. Analyzes Industry underwriting rules and system standards and formulates recommendations that help to identify new market opportunities and system enhancements.
e. Benchmarks SB Underwriting Rules against competitors, examining the strengths and weaknesses of Westfield relative to those competitors. Analyzes and understands competitor positions and makes recommendations for enhancement(s) or development(s) of the Westfield Underwriting Rules to strengthen competitive position.
4. Consults with product development on trends and emerging issues to implement and update system requirements to support growth and profit.
5. Supports the monitoring of underwriting rules performance by line of business, industry, and business class.

Desired Qualifications/Experience/Certification/Education (in order of importance)
1. 3+ years of experience in the property / casualty industry.
2. 2+ years of experience performing various analyses including research and development experience and a working knowledge of product lifecycle management.
3. Experience with commercial insurance product automation, processes and functions.
4. Experience developing business cases and developing and communicating business needs and project specifications.
5. Experience tactfully and persuasively handling conflict.
6. Solid oral, written, and interpersonal skills, including facilitation and group presentation skills.
7. Experience interpreting insurance financial metrics.
8. Strong initiative and work management skills.
9. Strong knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
10. Bachelor’s degree in Business or Risk Management or commensurate experience.
11. Valid driver’s license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.

• Ability to work effectively in an office environment for 40+ hours per week (including sitting, standing and working on a computer for extended periods of time).
• Ability to communicate effectively in a collaborative work environment utilizing various technologies such as: telephone, computer, web, voice, teleconferencing, e-mail, etc.
• Ability to travel as required.
• Ability to operate an automobile within the parameters of the driving policy.
