The Communications Manager develops, implements, manages and measures communication strategies and initiatives for the department that help accelerate Allstates competitive advantage through reputation, increase confidence in Allstates business strategy and create a more purpose-driven culture. They build and sustain strong relationships with others within and outside the department, and across many leadership levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement communication and strategic engagement plans for one or more of the seven key Allstate stakeholders (employees, consumers, customers, agency force, opinion leaders, policy makers and investors), with a goal to improve Allstates reputation overall and by individual stakeholder.
  • Strategic Communication Counsel for the Allstate Personal Lines President: Provide strategic communication counsel to president, APL, translating enterprise priorities into internal/external actions that support stakeholder engagement and/or build and protect Allstates reputation. Use interpersonal influence to build relationships and provide effective counsel.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Use stakeholder data and analytics to monitor and measure the effectiveness of internal/external communication plans and stakeholder engagement plans in the short term and recommend enhancements.
  • Storytelling and Content Creation: Manage the internal and external speaking engagement calendar for the president, APL, and develop comprehensive briefs and strategies for addressing various audiences. With a mindset of curiosity, find story ideas that help raise awareness of Allstate as an innovative, customer-centric and caring company. Write content that aligns with corporate and stakeholder narratives and storylines.
  • PR/Media Relations and Issues Management: Work independently, or with the enterprise PR team, to develop and pitch content, and secure placement in traditional and social media channels (owned, earned and paid), and on internal communication platforms as appropriate. Take a 360-degree perspective to uncover issues that may negatively impact Allstates reputation, working with the Issues Team on resolution and mitigation.

  • Champion of Culture: Support the implementation of communication plans and tactics to help create an inclusive, empowering, and purpose-driven corporate culture aligned to and supportive of Allstates corporate strategy and narrative. Model effective change behaviors to encourage others through times of change.
  • Talent Development: Serve as a peer leader across the team and department and actively recruiter talent. If required, effectively recruit, onboard and support ongoing development of direct reports.
  • Resource Allocation and Budget Management: support development of project and program budgets and manage forecasts monthly in support of Corporate Relations goals. As needed, manage external/vendor relationships according to department expectations and corporate policies.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This role may have direct supervisory responsibilities; dependent on final leadership team assignment.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree required, preferably in communication, marketing, journalism or related field. Masters degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years of experience in corporate communication or public relations preferred; insurance or financial services business acumen a plus.

Functional Skills

  • Strategic Communication Planning and Strategic Counsel: Experience in using data and analytics to develop, execute and measure the effectiveness of integrated communication plans that move key stakeholders from awareness to advocacy and action. Experience providing strategic communication counsel, including ability to listen for understanding, and influencing business leaders, external partners and vendors.
  • Reputation and Brand Management: Understanding of reputation and brand management and confidence in recommending, developing and incorporating strategies that will protect and build the brands reputation with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Understanding of stakeholders and how to communicate effectively through written, multimedia, digital and in-person communications. Highly proficient in Associated Press style.

Job Qualifications (Cont'd)

  • Media Relations and Issues Management: Success developing content and securing placement in traditional and social media channels owned, earned and paid. Experience identifying potential issues that may negatively affect the brand and providing strategic counsel and effective communication support during a crisis.
  • Business Acumen: Knowledge of the insurance and financial services industry. Knowledge of global and macroeconomic trends. Understanding of Allstates business and our varied distribution channels a plus.
  • Critical Thinking and Change Agility: Analytical thinking, problem-solving capabilities, including the ability to help identify the root causes and key obstacles behind issues or needs, consider stakeholder reactions and offer communication solutions. Effectively support self and others through change, demonstrating flexibility and confidence amid ambiguity.
  • Project Management: Proficient in creating and managing work plans to organize projects into tasks, sequencing activities for maximum efficiency, estimating and managing time and budget required to complete tasks. Identify issues and adapt plan as needed while remaining committed to project deadlines and timelines. Experience leading/co-leading project teams.
