Global Retail Markets is a Liberty Mutual business unit with $28B in premium, $18B in loss reserves, and personal and small commercial lines business written across fifteen countries. The Chief Reserving Actuary and team are responsible for evaluating and opining on those loss reserves to GRMs President, Chief Actuary, Chief Financial Officer, and the three regional Chief Operating Officers (GRM US, East and West).

This is an exciting role with tremendous influence and visibility, as well as an opportunity to be on a highly engaged leadership team within GRM Actuarial.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicating the overall health of the balance sheet, and potential risks to the balance sheet, to senior GRM executives.

  • Leading and developing a strong US-based group of 50 actuaries, analysts, and data specialists across four teams.

  • Performing quarterly loss and loss expense reserving for GRM US, including direct losses and ceded affinity group losses.

  • Estimating and directing the booking of catastrophe loss reserves as cats occur throughout the year, as well as performing retrospective analysis of catastrophe reserves. For larger catastrophes, coordinating analyses and booking recommendations with Claims, Product, and Finance.

  • Opining on the strength of the East and West loss and expense reserves, as well as providing independent and peer reviews supporting the two East and West actuarial leaders. Also, working with those leaders to ensure consistent best reserving practices at a market level.

  • Presenting quarterly booking recommendations to the GRM President and Chief Financial Officer.

  • Working with the GRM Actuarial planning team to determine base pure premiums/base loss ratios for the loss and loss expense components of annual planning for GRM US.

  • Driving data strategy and enablement for the US part of GRM Actuarial.

  • Collaborating with the GRS and Corporate actuarial reserving teams, seeking opportunities to share knowledge and leverage best practices.

  • Working in close collaboration with Product, Claims and Finance, developing a common view of the health of the balance sheet and the overall business.

  • Ensuring that actuarial processes comply with internal operational control requirements, and that US reserving practices meet all other external regulatory and audit requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) required.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply the depth/breadth of actuarial skills and business acumen with 7 or more years of progressively responsible actuarial experience, including managerial and reserving experience.

  • Detailed knowledge of personal and business lines preferred.

  • Understanding of how operational changes can impact data, in order to mitigate risks and uncover data issues when there are system changes or major Claims initiatives.

  • Experience with ResQ software desirable.

  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, in order to establish and build effective relationships within and outside the organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate areas of senior management concern, integrate different perspectives, and respond accordingly.

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, develop, and delegate to team members
