How This Role Contributes to Brighthouse Financial:

Brighthouse Financial is seeking an attorney to join the Legal Department to work on investment matters for the Companys $80+ billion general account. The attorney will join a team of lawyers responsible for providing insurance-related legal advice to the Companys Investments Department, including support for its derivatives desk and legal services in connection with the onboarding and oversight of third-party investment managers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and negotiate various investment-related agreements
  • Support the Companys derivatives desk, including negotiating of ISDAs, CSAs, regulatory initial margin documentation, and other derivatives-related agreements
  • Maintain and develop investment guidelines for the Companys investment portfolios across multiple investment managers
  • Process investment-related regulatory filings
  • Action investment-related litigations and class actions, working with internal and external stakeholders as appropriate
  • Maintain corporate governance over certain of the Companys investment subsidiaries
  • Assist with development and maintenance of policies and procedures for the Investments Department
  • Interact as needed with third-party investment managers and service providers about investment guidelines, investment management agreements and other agreements
  • Research and advise on applicable laws, regulations and requirements under deal documents
  • Prepare resolutions and review reports for insurance entity boards
  • Work with external counsel, as needed, on matters pertaining to general account investments and contracts
  • Work with attorneys and compliance professionals, other practice areas as well as other internal partners in a collegial and coordinated fashion
  • Perform other duties as required

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Admitted to practice in New Jersey or at least one state with ability to register as in-house counsel in New Jersey
  • 2-7 years investments law and/or derivatives experience, either with a law firm or in-house
  • Experience negotiating investment documents and service contracts and/or derivatives documentation
  • Experience interacting with internal clients and managing or escalating questions or issues as appropriate
  • Strong drafting, negotiating, problem-solving, analytical, and oral/written communication skills
  • Self-starter, hard worker, able to work independently, reliable, responsive, and accountable to deliver results
  • Ability to balance competing demands and multiple deadline-sensitive matters
  • Willingness to take on challenging assignments and become familiar with new areas of the law
  • Willingness to receive coaching and mentoring from management and/or more experienced team members
