As a Senior Underwriter, you will ensure a profitable book of Public Entity Insurance business in the Northeast Region by appropriately evaluating the acceptability of risks within delegated authority levels. You will partner with agents to lead a moderately complex book of commercial business or agency relationships. You will support marketing activities to agents and take part in the agency management process. The Senior Underwriter is also responsible for working with and protecting confidential and proprietary customer and Company information.

You will:

  • Evaluate the business applying for insurance by qualifying accounts; identifying, selecting and assessing risks.
  • Decide premium, policy terms and conditions; obtaining approvals; creating/presenting the proposal to the agent/broker and successfully negotiating deals.
  • Support and preserve successful relationships with Agents and Brokers by providing stewardship with service partners, including initial setup of service dedications, and regular visits.
  • Lead a book of business by analyzing the portfolio, identifying areas of opportunity for improved growth, profit and diversification, and executing marketing plans to increase market share with preferred brokers.
  • Document files in a way that reflects a firm thought process and decision-making through comprehensive account reviews, sign-offs and referrals.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement by fully engaging in daily huddles, generating suggestions, following appropriate procedures and work principles, participating in problem solving activities, and using continuous improvement tools to support the work of the team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent preferred, continuing insurance education desired.
  • Individual passionate about success with 3-10 years of success in a commercial underwriting role.
  • Ability to analyze variables, such as type & amount of coverage, loss control, credit reports, and loss experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of commercial insurance coverages, contracts & underwriting guidelines.
  • Formally and informally guide, mentor, and coach underwriters in both technical and professional skills.
  • Ability to interact successfully with customers to build & maintain good business relationships. Negotiation and pricing skills. Hard work, honesty, integrity and unwavering business ethics.
