Liberty Mutual Insurance Group (LMIG) is recruiting for a Director II of International Taxation based in Boston, MA. The International Tax director will be results-oriented and responsible for co-leading the International Tax function of LMIG.

LMIG is a large, complex organization that has a fast paced growth globally. With increasing complexity of global taxation, successful candidates in this role will focus on research and planning, assist in the management of all aspects of International financial reporting/tax compliance, foreign tax calculations (Subpart F, GILTI, BEAT, foreign tax credits), audits, merger and acquisitions, exercising judgment and demonstrating expertise based on experience and proven technical abilities. You will also assist in setting our strategies across the full range of international activities, from planning and implementation through to documenting and monitoring and eventually to defense.

In addition, in this role you will also be a leader in a well-respected, value-added Tax Department that has a seat at the table with senior management. You will need to take ownership of key projects and deliverables, as well as manage ambiguity and demonstrate the ability to be flexible and comfortable with change.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Actively manage all aspects of performance including engaging and motivating employees through honest feedback and coaching; effective management of performance and talent cycles. Identify, select, develop and retain strong talent.

  • Proactively develop best practices in the post-US tax reform environment from planning through defense, and ensure these practices are embraced by the broader LMIG finance community. Serve as a liaison for tax and finance professionals across the enterprise to facilitate best-in-class planning and execution.

  • Direct the management team on the monthly and quarterly financial reporting process. Approve complex tax-related financial calculations, analyses and disclosures. Ensure completeness of results/disclosures. Present results explain variances and trends to SVP Sr. Directors, and CFO/Controller as appropriate

  • Interpret/implement tax reform regulations and monitor global tax trends, assess risk, propose and or approve recommended action plans; and communicates key findings to SVP Senior Directors.

  • Proactively identify, recommend and manage implementation of cost-effective tax planning strategies designed to create value and optimize the Company's worldwide tax position.

  • Develop tax controversy strategy and audit management for international tax inquiries.

  • Direct the management team in execution of all U.S. tax compliance for foreign operations, coordinates international tax compliance processes including adherence to policies and procedures and compliance disclosures. Develop technology and process improvement strategies for compliance activities

  • Review and approve complex international tax research projects, memoranda and supporting documentation. Confirm all aspects have been considered and all alternatives explored. Present findings and conclusions to SVP, Senior Directors and SBU/Corporate senior management as appropriate. Communications include executive summary of issue, analysis of risk, implications to financial reporting and disclosure processes and impact to business.

Qualifications:

To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have:

  • BS in Accounting, Finance, Business or equivalent. MST, MSA, MBA or CPA, JD, LLM preferred. Insurance industry experience preferred.

  • At least 10 years of progressive U.S. International Taxation experience with Big Four or comparable in-house role of a multinational organization

  • Demonstrated critical thinking ability and strong financial acumen

  • Highly analytical, detail oriented with advanced reporting skills

  • Outstanding issue recognition skills

  • Outstanding opportunity recognition skills

  • Proven track record of process improvement

  • Experience with Oracle, HFM, SAP, MS-Excel, MS-Word, MS-Visio, and reporting tools preferred

  • Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to provide clear and concise information to individuals outside the taxation team

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with diverse personalities in a high matrixed organization

  • Insurance industry experience a plus, but not required
