Job Summary
The Select Field Underwriting Lead position exists to ensure the proper strategic leadership and accountability to drive consistency and effectiveness across their assigned field underwriting centers. They are ultimately accountable to ensure effective Profit and Loss of the centers by leading leaders to execute Select underwriting and sales strategies on all lines of business and agencies across multiple assigned underwriting centers. The average premium volume this individual would be accountable for is $600M. The Select Field Underwriting Lead direct reports consist of eight to ten Underwriting Directors. Each Underwriting Director will have approximately 10 Account Executives as direct reports. The Underwriting Director teams are aligned by state(s) and work closely with respective Sales Directors and Sales Executives and Business Centers. Each Select Field Underwriting Lead will be accountable for 3-4 underwriting centers within a region or multiple regions consisting of 60-80 Underwriting Professionals. The Select Field Underwriting Lead works closely with Select RVPs, 2VPs, UW, Home Office Underwriting, Regional Underwriting Directors, 2VPs of Field Operations, and State and Territory Product Management to formulate/refine regional and state level product, underwriting and pricing strategies for the offices they directly manage and the strategic oversight for those that report in. The Select Field Underwriting Lead has overall responsibility for talent development and performance management for all 2VPs of Underwriting, Underwriting Directors and Account Executives within their assigned centers. Their execution of talent management practices should be involving, influencing and executing through and in collaboration with their 2VP ultimately creating fungible skillsets across geography and specialty areas where appropriate. The Select Field Underwriting Lead works closely with aligned Select and Middle Market Business Centers, Field Vice Presidents, Regional Vice President(s), Select Regional Presidents, Sales Directors in support of regional and state business plan achievement. This job is a Manager of managers: Senior level manager that is responsible for managing the objectives, performance, and compensation of lower levels of management. This job works under General Direction: Establishes strategy and action plans for attaining specific goals and objectives relative to Profit & Loss management within the region.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develops a multi-year strategic action plan to support the growth and profitability of the region.
  • Takes the lead in collaborating with Select RVPs, 2VPs UW, Sales Directors & Sales Executives, Home Office Underwriting, Sales Effectiveness and Product Management to develop, implement, and ensure consistent execution of regional and state line of business, segment or program strategies based on specific or unique regional or state needs or requirements
  • Partners with Select RVP to lead strategic business, rate review & agency planning activities with PM team and Sales to capitalize on opportunities, address profit trends, and develop strategies appropriate for Line of Business and Segments across the Region.
  • Ensures effective execution of Select and Regional Territory & Agency management strategies. Works collaboratively with Business Center, Operations, and Sales leadership team to create and maintain positive 'customer experience'.
  • Influences Profitability by understanding the financial performance of the region and providing thought leadership, coordination and execution of a plan to improve profitability both proactive and reactively as market conditions change.
  • Engages Distribution by developing deep agent relationships across regional assignment to drive profitable growth. This includes regular travel and agency visits, being visible, credible, proactive, solution oriented with distribution partners which will be foundational to effectiveness with distribution engagement.
  • Leads Multiple Locations that include remote teams and matrix organization
  • Provides people leadership (driving change toward strategy, facilitating the adoption of best practices and new behaviors, ability to create a strong and positive culture, providing day to day supervisory support) to large, multi-location teams.
  • Leads Underwriting Centers to achieve Regional plans, KPIs and State/Territory financial results for all products across both Express & Plus markets by driving underwriting and sales processes.
  • Creates and cultivate strong and inclusive underwriting and sales culture.
  • Builds talent pipeline, leads performance management, and ensures talent development to attract and retain a diverse and engaged team of qualified people
  • Ensures consistent and timely execution of underwriting strategies through adherence to defined standards, processes and controls.
  • Consistently present in each Underwriting Center traveling monthly to each Underwriting Center Ensures underwriting integrity/quality through timely completion and analysis of Underwriting Self Assessments.
  • Collaborates with other BU s and matrixed teams by working across Travelers and BI to provide distribution solutions and support (Middle Market, Bond & Specialty, Claim, Premium audit, Operations, BI Field VPs, RPs, etc.).
  • Partners with Product Management and Sales on Strategic initiatives to respond to competitive intelligence.
  • Works closely with Business Center leadership to achieve retention and profit targets on renewal business as well as Express New Business.
  • Works closely with the Regional Underwriting Officers (RUOs) to ensure adherence to compliance guidelines and to assure timely delivery of technical training based on identified needs and opportunities.
  • Works closely with the Regional Underwriting Officers (RUOs) to implement and execute CAT Management strategies
  • Works closely with the Operations Director to assure implementation and consistent execution of workflow and service processes and hierarchies.
  • Partners with Marketing on 'Go to Market' strategies and local marketing efforts to drive improved business results.
  • Works closely with Enterprise partners to identify business opportunities on behalf of the Enterprise. Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
Ten years Commercial Underwriting experience, preferably in small accounts.

Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
Knowledge of Select product, operations, and agency distribution. Previous managerial experience. Ability to manage own work and direct the work of others. Ability to set clear direction by defining goals and priorities. Exceptional organization, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, interpersonal, time management, verbal and written communication skills.
