We have an opening for a Private Flood Commercial Underwriter I in our Scottsdale, AZ offices. The purpose of this role is to drive profitable growth of commercial flood business through evaluation, selection, acceptable, rejection, pricing and servicing of commercial flood policies within accepted company risk framework.

The Private Flood Commercial Underwriter will evaluate the risk to determine whether this risk is rated correctly. In addition, the Private Flood Commercial Underwriter I will analyze and collect all pertinent information needed to issue the policy and is responsible for rerating the risk to meet proper company and federal guidelines. There will be direct contact with clients and customers by phone, email, fax and mail.

Review new business submission, rate commercial policies, review policies for coverage limits, deductibles, and endorsements. (80%)

  • Ensure policy issuance is compliant with applicable State laws.

  • Communicate with retail agents/brokers to obtain documentation for underwriting and pricing commercial flood risk.

  • Assist agents in Quoting.

  • Underwrite new business, renewals, endorsements & cancellations according to Assurant Private Flood underwriting rules and guidelines.

  • Make independent decisions within guidelines and procedures engages other team members or supervisor for assistance as needed when working through new items.

Assist in prospecting new business by developing relationship with sales team and retail agencies. (10%)

  • Has direct contact with clients and customers by phone, email, fax and mail, as well as in-house marketing representatives and risk analysis team.

  • Answer incoming calls from Agents, Mortgage Companies and Insureds.

  • Explain and provide product guidance to agents/insureds/mortgage companies/sales reps.

Advocate for customers, suggests improvements to product and systems based on observations and feedback from customers. (10%)

  • Develop custom solutions that cater to customer needs and the external market environment while maintaining underwriting integrity.
  • Correct Pending Errors according to Assurant Private Flood SLAs and re-underwrite as needed after internal audit review.

  • Rapidly gain knowledge and experience with computer system and company products and services.

  • Provide support as needed for product underwriting and systems problems/issues resolution.

  • Create and maintain process and procedure documentation.

Hours for this position are 7:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday and could include some overtime. Licensed P&C Agents are encouraged to apply.


Basic Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1 year of National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or other property and casualty insurance experience is preferred
  • Applies underwriting and risk selection techniques to determine the acceptability of new and renewal insurance risks
  • Responds to inquiries regarding underwriting processes and decisions, interpretation of policy forms and coverages and premium levels
  • Uses clear guidelines, applicable underwriting manual, and established authority levels. Makes independent decisions within guidelines and procedures
  • Previous experience with Customer Service is preferred
  • Strong communication skills a must
  • Ability to adapt to change in a fast-paced growing environment, with an emphasis on initiative, critical thinking and accountability

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced high volume team based environment
  • Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude through a friendly and outgoing phone voice
  • Demonstrates excellent listening skills and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in data entry and using 10-key
  • Able to type 40 words per minute
  • Experience with MS Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Agency license (Property & Casualty)
  • Basic understanding of NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program) Program a plus
  • College degree a plus
