Reporting to the CFO, Liberty Mutual Investments (LMI), leads the investment accounting function for LMI by supporting our executive team with real-time financial updates and analytics while partnering with corporate finance and SBU controllers. The Investment Controller uses an organizational design that is scalable and efficient, and leads with a continual improvement mindset constantly evaluating the operating model. The Investment Controller directs all activities, practices and procedures relating to LMI accounting and planning & analysis including development of all accounting records and analytical information, preparation of financial documents and analysis of operating results and trends. Finally, you maintain a strong control environment that incorporates the impact of accounting changes and market trends.

Responsibilities for this position will include the following:
  • As a dynamic leader drives the investment finance function for LMI through partnerships across the organization, focusing on investment results and analytics, maintaining a strong control environment, understanding the impact of operations and technology, and investing in talent.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with a focus on delivering an effective executive reporting package that provides quick transparency of the financials and supports the investment function.
  • Focuses on improvements in execution that result in more timely and accurate preparation of financial information.
  • Hires, develops, provides coaching to, and makes compensation recommendations for, assigned staff. Defines individual performance objectives and development plans, and ensures alignment with project and unit objectives.
  • Participates in key technology initiatives impacting the finance function
  • Reviews investment results and makes control recommendations to senior management that improve operating efficiency or investment results of the organization.
  • Directs the maintenance of accounting procedures, practices and programs for LMI
  • Has overall responsibility for information provided by group. Responsible for ensuring that department provides timely and accurate information to internal (LMI, Corporate, etc.) or external (NAIC, auditors, states, etc.) customers.
  • Manages department budget by leading the preparation of forecasts, annual budgets and analyzing monthly expenses. Oversees strategic vendor relationships, partners with legal and procurement and Stays up to date on changing technology and environment within company. Uses information to help set department objectives and plan for appropriate resources and budget needs.

  • Establishes and maintains effective communication between Corporate and SBU functions. Uses relations to get answers to questions in order to provide useful information to management. Increases scope of understanding to be in a better position to suggest more involved operational improvement initiatives.
  • Oversees attestation process for respective group, ensuring that internal controls are working appropriately, tested as required, and issues are remediated timely.

You should have the following qualifications:
  • BS degree in Accounting, Finance, Business (or equivalent accounting experience).
  • Strong technical accounting skills required focusing on investment accounting. A CPA or CFA designation is preferred.
  • Requires 10+ years of significant accounting/reporting experience, ideally in the insurance/financial services industry.
  • Additionally, a minimum of 10 years of management responsibility.
