Job Details
The Senior COBOL Engineer formulates data processing solutions to business problems, and performs analytical and programming tasks for any assigned project. Under minimal supervision, evaluates moderate to complex system requests, determines the appropriate methods for meeting user needs and develops specifications and/or automated solutions.
Responsibilities- Analyze moderate to complex business problems by interfacing with various departments to develop detailed programming specifications including, but not limited to cost benefit, input, output, file structures, algorithms, and report layouts.
- Code programs, document, test, debug, and verify results for complex program assignments with little direct supervision. Prepare test data for both unit and system tests.
- Debug systems problems and analyze complex program dumps, provide solutions, and communicate solutions to programmers and users. Maintain 24 hour oncall duty for support of systems in the incumbent's area.
- Bachelors Degree in any discipline preferred or equivalent technical training or work experience.
- Property and Casulaty insurance business fundamentals with specific knowledge of insurance systems.
- Thorough knowledge of structured programming and design techniques.
- Five plus years information systems experience in a technical capacity with large scale, table driven modular systems.
- A minimum of four or more years insurance or financial related application experience or six years general insurance or financial knowledge.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Detail orientation
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Mainframe programming skills incluing COBOL, VSAM, COBOL MVS, JCL, TSO/ISPF
- Additional skills including Easytrieve, CICS, XPORTER, FILEAID
- Knowledge of the All Lines Process System (ALPS) a great plus!
