For an assigned book of the largest and most complex commercial Inland Marine business, in addition, analyzes the customer's property exposures, hazards, financial information, requested coverages, loss history, pricing targets and desired program structure to select business and determine appropriate terms and conditions. Independently produces and manages own profitable book of business and manages producer/customer relationships. Maintains the highest level of skills/knowledge in the domestic U.S. Inland Marine industry segment. Shares underwriting expertise with underwriters at all levels and provides development and guidance to less experienced team members.

In this Unique Underwriting role, you will be writing specialized coverage for large and complex inland marine risks, the Property Inland Marine team has the expertise and experience to support the complex and changing needs of our customers.

Focusing on midsized and large contractors, large property owners and developers, and energy risks:
Commercial, including industrial and institutional
New construction and renovation
Civil and infrastructure
Energy projects and equipment, including new construction and retrofitting

Responsibilities:
  • Independently works to appropriately select Inland Marine business, evaluates these risks, and recommends the appropriate Inland Marine insurance program structure, services and pricing to achieve a balanced portfolio and long term profitability.
  • Visits policyholders and producers in order to retain existing accounts, maintain business relationships and develop new opportunities in support of the producer and territory management plan.
  • Independently reviews engineering information to assess risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiates appropriate loss prevention actions.
  • Evaluates reinsurance requirements and implements appropriate action.
  • Communicates and collaborates across disciplines to establish and maintain relationships to achieve organizational and policyholder success.
  • Leads the development and coaching of less experienced Inland Marine underwriters, shares knowledge of industry specific specialty with underwriters of all levels.
  • Actively continues to improve personal knowledge and practices of the insurance industry through work experience, in-house instruction, insurance specific designations (e.g. CPCU), industry courses, home office seminars and workshops, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Expert High-level capability knowledge of with commercial Inland Marine underwriting principles, practices and procedures as well as the highest level of skill and business acumen.
  • Highly developed negotiation and communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in establishing and sustaining relationships with producers and customers as normally acquired through a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and a minimum of 8-10 years commercial Inland Marine underwriting or related experience.
  • Candidates typically possess an advanced degree and/or professional designation (e.g. CPCU/ARM).
