How This Role Contributes to Brighthouse Financial:

This tax professional will be responsible for the management of Federal and State income tax audits as well as the Appeals process. As part of the Federal Income tax Audit, this professional will be responsible for communications with the IRS Coordinated Exam Program (CEP) Audit Team and the formulation of strategies/negotiations in dealing with the IRS. This tax professional will be responsible for communicating significant tax issues and audit trends to senior management. This tax professional will also be responsible for establishing appropriate financial reserves for tax risks (accounting for uncertain tax positions) and communicating with senior management and the external auditors as to the appropriateness of these reserves. He/she will also be responsible for managing indirect tax audits including audits of employment taxes, sales and use taxes and premium taxes. This position will report to the Head of Tax Risk Audit & Controversy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and coordinate IRS audits/appeals/litigation to sustain justifiable tax positions in a favorable manner and minimize tax and interest assessments related to tax positions taken on tax returns.
  • Account for GAAP and STAT adequacy of tax risk reserves to senior management and external auditors.
  • Brief senior tax management on significant tax audit developments and make sound recommendations.
  • Preparation of written responses to IRS Information Document Requests (IDRs).
  • Mange indirect tax audits of state employment taxes, sales and use taxes, premium taxes and personal property taxes. Prepare responses to IDRs.
  • Communicate with Finance regarding tax-sensitive book accounting policies and changes
  • Identify and implement opportunities for process improvement to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the tax audit function.
  • Oversee the preparation of and perform review of monthly computation of financial reserves for tax risks (accounting for uncertain tax positions, FIN 48)
  • Prepare footnote for quarterly and annual statements relating to financial reserves for tax risks
  • Maintain the Tax Departments Record Retention Policy to ensure adequate retention of information necessary for tax audits.
  • Manage and coordinate the tax portion of external audits and work with the external auditors to ensure the accuracy of tax information in the financial statements, and the sufficiency of the related disclosures
  • Participate in special projects relating to the effect of tax legislation on our business.
  • Create documentation of the authority for large Tax Return Positions for Audit.

Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Finance, CPA or Masters in Tax/ Accounting Preferred
  • Preferred 8-10 years of tax reporting and compliance experience in the finance industry or in a tax practice of a major accounting firm working with the finance industry.
  • Working proficiency with tax software (i.e., Corptax, OneSource, other)
  • Technical expertise and experience in tax and tax accounting.
  • Technical proficiency in accounting for uncertain tax positions.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to present easily understood explanations of complex tax issues
  • Strong accounting and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage issues and projects across Tax and business partners
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex financial and process-related information to management
  • Ability to manage multiple complex tasks towards completion at the same time
  • Willingness to work on tax issues for other managers as the need arises
