Job Description

Data Discovery and Decision Science (D3) is the research and analytics organization at Allstate. We are 300+ people solving some of todays most complex analytics problems, making the lives of our Allstate colleagues easier and more productive, and driving our mission to deliver exceptional insurance solutions to our customers. Job Summary

The ideal candidate will be well versed in both agile development and modern ETL / Data Lake technology stack. The individual will build the analytics capabilities and products to enhance Allstates performance in the marketplace by effectively utilizing Data Science and Predictive Analytics. The candidate is an analytics and engineering expert who can research, explore and develop analytic tools into useful, innovative business solutions across a host of disciplines. The individual will have the analytic products, real-time decision delivery, data transformation, unstructured data, big data, machine learning, data visualization, and other quantitative and analytical skills that contribute directly to the application of predictive models and analytics that improve the competitiveness of Allstates solutions and drive business results.

Job Responsibilities

  • Participates in product scoping, discovery and framing, and inceptions providing technical input and helps translate user features into system design
  • Develop, implement and continually improve upon data science and analytics products and operational pipeline that integrate decision making across AORs and functions in support of Allstate strategies
  • Help define direction and map out tracks of work to live into short-term and long-term needs
  • Leads and participates in inceptions and iteration planning meetings, infusing backlogs with technical input
  • Leads and participates in daily site, cross-site, and product team standups
  • Leads and participates in retrospectives; demonstrating and encouraging each participant to provide feedback with empathy
  • Leads collaboration and strategy alignment across product portfolios (cross-product) in partnership with product managers, other peers and key stakeholders with the customer needs and wants in mind
  • Serves as the anchor of the team and practices technical leadership; helping guide the team in building prototypes, choosing the right technology, solving technical problems, and resolving any technical conflicts within the team
  • Collaborate data scientists, business users, project managers and other engineers to achieve elegant solutions.
  • Provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Work alongside other engineers on the team to elevate technology and consistently apply best practices.
  • Leads and participates in knowledge sharing, and contributes to the overall growth of the collective knowledge of the D3 community.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters/MBA degree in a field such as Computer Science or Data Architecture
  • 7+ years of developing and implementing systems at scale.
  • Strong understanding of computer science concepts, enterprise integration patterns / design principles
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, databases and data lakes
  • Hands on experience and accountability architecting, creating, implementing and delivering large scale distributed systems and/or applications for the cloud, including microservices architectures
  • Experience developing software in different programming languages, and demonstrated ability to quickly learn new languages, including but not limited to Java (Spring Boot) / Scala and Python
  • Experience in backend development design and implementation; database (relational, NoSQL, caching), messaging and Big Data development, implementation and optimization
  • Hands on experience on modern Big Data stack (Kafka, Hadoop, Hive, Spark, Scoop and similar)
  • Knowledge and advanced experience using AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda, CloudWatch, Kinesis etc)
  • Experience with building APIs and services using REST and SOAP
  • Knowledge and experience on approaches and tools for automated testing (including performance testing) and monitoring
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with infrastructure automation technologies like Docker, Vagrant, etc.
  • Experience with build automation technologies like Maven, Jenkins, Gradle etc.
  • Able to learn new technologies, and teach other members of the team/s
  • Able to work effectively across organizational and geographical boundaries
