Job Description

York Risk is hiring a Data Scientist Intern in our Pittsburgh, PA office!

York Risk is seeking a data scientist intern with a focus in operations research. In this capacity this data scientist intern will focus on current in flight projects that are concerned with optimizing York Risk applications and processes. An ideal candidate will also be passionate about developing their skills to apply machine learning techniques to broader sets of projects and problems in the future.

They will extract knowledge or insights from structured and/or unstructured data. They draw upon the practice of data analysis, using predictive analytics, data mining, pattern recognition, data modeling, machine learning and various statistical methods in order to solve large scale optimization problems and to understand the meaning behind vast data sets

Role and Responsibility:

  • Apply machine learning and data mining techniques to extract actionable insights from large-scale, high-dimensional data

  • You will use statistical concepts such as regression, time series, mixed model, Bayesian methods, clustering, etc., to analyze data and provide insights

  • Compile data from disparate data sources leveraging both qualitative and quantitative data to build holistic views of overall process efficiency

  • Distill these complex analyses into presentations and recommendations for non-technical business units

  • Work with a variety of business units throughout the organization to help translate their requirements into specific analytical deliverables

  • Continue to improve and advance communications and collaborations amongst the various teams and business units

  • Youll work in an Agile, collaborative environment, partnering with business analysts, developers, and database administrators of all backgrounds and disciplines to bring analytical rigor and statistical methods to the challenges of predicting behaviors

  • Construction of simulation models to prove the experiments for staffing, cost, etc.

Skills:

  • Sr. Classmen or pursuing Masters Degree In:

Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or other quantitative field

  • Understanding of machine learning, including strong knowledge of the mathematical underpinnings behind various methods (e.g. regression techniques, neural networks, decision trees, clustering, pattern recognition, dimensionality reduction)

  • Proven experience in applied statistics and machine learning in a business setting

  • Understanding of the tools of the trade, including a variety of modern programming languages (R, Python, JavaScript) and open-source technologies

  • Experience in effective data visualization approaches and a keen eye for detail in the visual communication of findings

  • Comfort working and communicating with non-technical teams to translate business questions to analytically actionable questions

  • A strong desire to build meaningful solutions for our users and clients

  • Task oriented with ability to set goals and complete deliverables

  • Ability to collaborate, communicate and work closely with a team of technical and non-technical individual contributors

  • Preferred experience in simulation modeling with the expected tool being Simio

Tasks:

  • Work with end users to document processes, analyze workflow and decision matrix

  • Analyze data to determine impacts and value of changing the processes in terms of cost savings, efficiencies, and accuracy of execution

  • Work with technical teams to determine application improvements and changes that can be made based on the analysis. Could be enhanced rules engine, new algorithms, changing user processes based off of analysis

  • Experience in data analysis and converting that data into useful reporting and dashboards to empower end user leadership in decision making

  • Other tasks as they arrive based on the analysis.

Skills:

  • Solid communications skills interacting with users to executives

  • Excellent documentation skills

  • Ability to use reporting and data visualization tools

  • Strong process improvement skills from analysis through implementation of approved recommendations.

  • Excellent data analysis skills

  • Senior classmen, graduate student or graduated intern with Operations Research (OR), Industrial Engineering (IE), or related degree program
