Job Summary
Positions within this family explore and profile data, draw business inferences, complete analysis and clearly articulate findings for a target audience. This position performs accountabilities under general supervision. Position is an intermediate level role, requiring solid previous experience in Descriptive Analytics. Position accountable for performing core tasks of Descriptive Analytics (the exploration and investigation of past business performance). This job may lead others. Definition of General Supervision: incumbents are told what to do, but not how to do it. Incumbents have some discretion on work accountabilities.


Marketing Description
Travelers Claim Property has an exciting opportunity within Business Intelligence & Analytics for a Manager, Business Performance Analytics. Our Business Performance Analytics team is responsible for completing in-depth analysis to guide data-driven business decisions within Travelers Claim. This position requires a candidate with a strong analytical mindset, problem solving skills, technical acumen, and the ability to logically maneuver through ambiguous business problems that may not have a clear solution. A successful candidate will be an excellent team-player, as this position requires significant partnership with Claim, Underwriting, Actuarial, and Business Intelligence & Analytics groups across the Enterprise. This position does not manage, but future management opportunities may be available for motivated, effective, and capable staff.


Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Applies descriptive analytics to analyze data and validate assumptions, understand and may articulate results to a narrow audience.
  • Identifies, selects and extracts relevant data from various internal and external sources.
  • Manipulates raw data sets into information fit for analysis independently.
  • Monitors data to recognize patterns and analyzes trends independently.
  • Presents analysis and recommendations to business partners.
  • Develops reporting to monitor business critical results and transitions to appropriate area for continuing production (i.e. information development and or data management).
  • Provides required analysis, partnering with business analyst and managers.
  • Contributes to completing reasonability and validation tests using general business knowledge
  • Leads and participate in the peer review process.
  • Utilizes standardized peer review best practices.
  • Utilizes established best practices around Descriptive Analytics. May provide input into best practices.
  • May provide guidance to others on assignments.
  • Manages assigned projects independently.


Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree or equivalent education and 3 years analytics experience or 4 years analytics experience.

Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, finance, computer science, statistics, MIS or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Typically has a minimum of 4-6 years of experience in Descriptive Analytics or related field.
  • 4+ years working successfully with Microsoft office products and software/programming applications specific to business supported. Examples (but not limited to): SAS, SQL, QlikView, Cognos.
  • General knowledge of Descriptive Analytic practices and processes.
  • General knowledge of P&C Insurance products/concepts required
  • General knowledge of the main features of the collection of data and the relationship of data elements to each other.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and presentations skills - the ability to logically convey complex analysis to a less-technical audience
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel (i.e. Pivot tables) and PowerPoint
  • Intermediate programming experience preferred (SQL, SAS, Python, R, etc.)
  • General understanding and experience with data visualization preferred (i.e. QlikView)
