Job Summary
Come join a growing actuarial team in a dynamic and exciting department. The Enterprise Catastrophe Strategy & Analysis department is seeking a Senior Actuary to join our CAT Actuarial and Analytics team. You will be joining a group of dedicated professionals charged with leading Travelers to be in a position to endure catastrophic loss from natural and man-made perils.
The Actuarial team is looking for a motivated leader to help establish and grow a CAT ratemaking and product development team. This team would be responsible for providing governance and perspective on decisions related to CAT peril pricing across the Enterprise. The Actuarial team uses a variety of tools including 3rd party CAT models, loss experience, industry data, and GLM analysis. This position will supervise a small team.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
Solid background in ratemaking with a strong analytical knowledge base. A background in predictive modeling would be a plus. The position requires an individual who can succeed in a collaborative, innovation-driven environment, in tune with business needs and deadlines.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • Establish and update peril views of risk
  • Build CAT peril pricing for next gen by-peril products
  • Create and refine business unit benchmark pricing tools incorporating multivariate GLM analyses
  • Evaluate vendor CAT model changes and assess materiality to currently filed products
  • Develop best practices for CAT peril pricing and rate adequacy
  • Refine CAT loss experience trending methodologies to incorporate pertinent environmental factors
  • Create Enterprise and business unit regional risk/reward analyses and pro forma profitability studies
  • Enhance CAT business planning
  • Provide CAT perspective during the annual ROE model update
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to senior leadership and business partners


Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent education required. 5 years actuarial experience. Thorough knowledge of quantitative analysis required. Associate Actuarial Credential required.

Education, Work Experience & Knowledge
  • Bachelors Degree in actuarial science, mathematics, economics or statistics or equivalent required
  • 8 years of Actuarial experience preferred
  • Solid rate making background
  • Knowledge of either CAT models or predictive modeling a strong plus
  • Strong understanding of regulatory environment
  • Strong PC skills, Excel, Access, PowerPoint & Word.
  • Strong understanding of databases and data extraction
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Should be able to present to business or technical partners. Ability to effectively present recommendations and supporting analysis to business partners
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment


Job Specific & Technical Skills & Competencies
Demonstrated strong actuarial analysis and reporting skills. Strong understanding of actuarial and other insurance related models (i.e. property CAT, ROE and RBC models). May be an expert in a specific area. Solid understanding of financial reporting, both GAAP and Stat. Sound understanding of income statements and balance sheets. Experience with financial modeling and forecasting.

Physical Requirements
Operates standard office equipment. Sitting (can stand at will). Use of Keyboards, Sporadic 10-Key.

Licensing or Certificates
Has usually achieved Fellowship. Minimum Associate.
