Job Description
Life Technology Solutions (LTS) in support of Allstate Life and Retirement (ALR) seeks a Software Development Manager who will lead by fostering the development of a common vision; providing clear direction and priorities; clarifying roles and responsibilities; recognizing and removing barriers to progress; encouraging and empowering others to achieve; creating enthusiasm and a desire to excel; accurately assessing the strengths and development needs of team members; giving timely, specific feedback and coaching; providing challenging assignments and opportunities, and driving continuous improvement.
This position is to lead the Underwriting, Workflow, and Claims Product teams. This leader will be responsible for several business applications that support mission critical day-to-day operations and large strategic initiatives. These vital back-office applications include Automated Workflow Distributor (AWD), Magnum rules engine, Life Underwriting System (LUS), Ebix TPP (emerging underwriting workbench), and OTIS claims system. This role is responsible for ensuring streamlined development occurs on the applications and avoiding code contention issues across the teams inflight work.
Responsibilities
General
- Build and maintain relationships with all levels of employees and partners by creating an environment of safety and innovation within the organization and across peer groups
- Develop ideas and team strategy that have long-term, strategic area of responsibility and that align with Enterprise direction. Resposible for initiating work and allocating resources necessary to implement strategy and achieve organizational goals
- Provide technical and professional leadership over a spectrum of changes from small to large and complex initiatives where multiple architectural disciplines are involved; Execute governance over solutions
- Identify opportunities to enhance technology and architecture. Create and articulate the case for change by highlighting the potential business / customer benefits
People Management
- Build long-term relationships within team and amongst peers by creating an environment of safety and innovation
- Model and create an environment of accountability for the team, peer groups and leaders by setting clear performance objectives in support of business outcomes
- Serve as a role model for personal development, incorporating 360-degree performance feedback; Maintain organizational focus on talent development
- Executes HR-related processes and develops staff through coaching and mentoring and providing specific, timely, open, honest, and constructive performance feedback
- Leads employees and influences peers through change by using ones self as an example
- Leads teams in multiple locations and multiple time-zones, including US, UK and India
Business Partnership
- Influence direct reports, partners, service providers and peers to succesfully deliver on business commitments
- Partner with others in the organization to set and manage expectations; continually seeks opportunities to be a thoughtful partner and increase business partner satisfaction and deepen relationships
- Negotiate solutions for issues that may be complex or controversial
- Adapt communication approach for audiences at multiple internal and external levels
- Partner with and manages vendor relationships including contract negotiations and SLA compliance
Job Qualifications
- Education and experience Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related area, or equivalent work experience. Additional experience with life insurance business processing and technologies noted above is a plus.
- 7+ years of software development and implementation related experience.
- 5+ years experience in people or technical leadership or equivalent experience leading a team or working in a team oriented collaborative environment.
- Experience with life insurance and annuity new business, underwriting, claims and related processing is a plus.
- Familiarity with implementing and managing Agile / Scrum and traditional development approaches.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to train, mentor and build competent technical teams.
The preferred work location for this position is Lincoln, NE.
