The Chief Underwriting Officer manages, controls and oversees the underwriting and marketing functions for the company, maintaining overall accountability for the day to day functions, processes, procedures and financial impact to the organization. This position develops and reviews key work processes and procedures to create and maintain an efficient and financially sound underwriting organization, establishing and ensuring achievement of proper performance measures. The Chief Underwriting Officer oversees and ensures the integrity and quality of all underwriting decisions and compliance with company underwriting guidelines and all applicable laws, including but not limited to state specific Department of Insurance Regulations. All duties are to be performed in accordance with the Companys Mission, Vision and Core Values.

The ideal candidate for this position is a hands-on leader who has a demonstrated ability to serve in both a strategic and highly technical capacity. With this balanced approached, the Chief Underwriting Officer will guide underwriting and marketing staff in a manner conducive to achieving the company mission, with consistent involvement in the day-to-day operation and competence to model expected behaviors.

Essential Functions

  • Sets proper tone and standard of outstanding interpersonal skills in all customer and employee relations.
  • Sets proper tone and standard for prompt, accurate and professional work.
  • Ensures a team-oriented work environment.
  • Manages and supervises all technical and administrative matters related to the underwriting and marketing operation, ensuring proper, professional and quality work output.
  • Reviews, establishes and corrects, where necessary, all processes and procedures related to technical and administrative matters and work flows, ensuring high levels of productivity.
  • Supervises activities of staff to ensure new insurance applications and inquiries are being reviewed for risk exposure and compliance with state specific Department of Insurance Regulations and company underwriting guidelines in a prompt, accurate and professional manner.
  • Establishes appropriate authority levels of staff commensurate with their abilities, knowledge and skills.
  • Reviews risks of a highly technical nature which may exceed responsible staff authority levels, and provide counsel and appropriate decisions.
  • Reviews, evaluates and reports on loss activity, ensuring proper dissemination of special loss reports in accordance with company standards and procedures.
  • Monitors underwriting and marketing activities to ensure proficiency in file control and documentation, as well as prompt and effective response to customer, producer, Senior Management or other department requests.
  • Oversees and evaluates activities to ensure profitable business growth in current and future markets.
  • Ensures adherence to effective personnel and personnel-related policies and procedures.
  • Manages and implements underwriting and marketing programs and special projects.
  • Provides strategic direction in building producer relationships to develop new and renewal business.
  • Oversees and actively participates in team performance reviews.
  • Provides strategic input in Special Loss Committee meetings and actively participates.
  • Complies with proper internal controls as necessary to conduct job functions and/or carry out responsibilities and/or administrative activities at the Company.
  • Provides counsel or arranges appropriate training as may be required to improve staff technical, administrative or processing skills.
  • Ensures customer service appeals and internal staffing issues are resolved appropriately.
  • Coordinates department activities with other support units or departments including Claims, Compliance, Accounting, Administration, etc.
  • Works with the CEO on various projects as needed.
  • Monitors industry trends and developments and advises the CEO and other departments when appropriate.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This position is on a full-time basis, with availability during the companys regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm. Availability is also occasionally required outside of regular business hours, to support the companys business needs.

Travel

Occasional travel is expected for this position (i.e. producer visits, training, seminars, etc.).

Required Education and Experience

  • College degree
  • Minimum of 20 years of experience with multi-line commercial underwriting technical expertise.
  • Minimum of 10 years of management experience in multi-line commercial underwriting operations.
  • Demonstrated track record of generating profitable business growth.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Active pursuit or completion of CPCU, AIC or other insurance professional designations.
